Title: MPG seems off?
Post by: Jimp on 08 March 2009, 20:00
Done a good bit of driving today which included a quick stint down a country road, a little bit in town but most of which was main road at around 105/110kph, because at 98-100kph my 1.4 revs around 2700-2800 rpm and uses more fuel than when it sits at 3000 revs at ~105kph. I've established that through checking instantaneous fuel usage. Today though my total average fuel use was 7.1l/100km which according to google is 33.1 MPG, which is crazy! The 1.4's combined MPG is meant to be closer to 40  Any ideas why there was such a drop?

I wouldn't pay too much attention to what it should be.  If its different to how it would usually be on that journey then you may have some investigating to do.  My average journey to work gets me about 26-30 mpg.  The other day I managed 40 mpg   No I wasn't grannying it either, this was a fun little country track so top speed was about 50.  Point is that fuel consumption is very variable depending on the road, traffic, what you've got in the car, driving style etc etc.  Just get a feel for whats normal based on your experience.

Wouldn't expect great MPG either tbh, thats a lot of weight for a 1.4 to carry about...
