Title: Slight nocking
Post by: zoomered on 08 March 2009, 13:44
After fitting a set of coilovers to the car ive been getting an ever so slight knocking from the front over bumps. Its a metallic tap sound. When i fitted them once i had tightened the funny nuts on the top down onto the top plate there was still a little play, is this correct? Thanks

Did you fit new top mounts, if not they will be the source of your knocking.

Not sure if its the top mounts or not cause they seemed pretty new. Was wondering though if those funny nuts are meant to tighten down fully before fitting so that there is no play. Its a light tapping noise almost like the spring seating but it can't be that. Not a heavy knocking or rubbing. Thanks

mine don't have any movement in the top plates and the nuts should stop movement!! check them and tighten if possible

Oh and can you resize your sig... its huge

Hi matey had the same problem with mine your suppose to replace the top mount and the bearings when you fit. Coilovers I'd do that of I were you then it should go, try wackibg some wd40 on the mount also are the springs sitting correctly ? What et are you wheels they might be catching the coilovers

I fitted coilovers to mine in January buddy, I didn't replace my front top mounts, after about 20 miles I got knocking. I replaced them with VR6 ones and hey presto, knocking is gone. 99% sure that's you problem. The standard ones just aren't upto the job I'm afraid.

And please get your sig resized lol!

Mine does a very similar thing when you turn the wheels to nearly full lock. Kind of like the spring being twisted then quickly slips causing a sound which is like tapping the spring lightly with a hammer (good description I thought ). Happens very occasionally over speed bumps too. I used vr6 top mounts as well.

That will be coilovers, mine were the same.

What would cause the coilovers to do this though? They only started doing it after I had a new gearbox fitted until then they have been fine for 6 months or so. Its seems to be coming from the near side coilover.
