Title: How to tell genuine bumper?
Post by: Gloves88 on 07 March 2009, 23:00
How do you tell if a big front bumper is genuine VW or not?

Am looking at buying one but dont know how to tell....

It doesnt have fog light holes, does that mean its a copy? Also do you get quality copy big bumpers?

Just want to make sure i'm being as safe as pos....

Cheers

Sarcasm: It doesn't look squint, or like mine

Sensible: It should be stamped with the little VW logo

Pattern bumpers usualy have a lighter texture colour (charcole) and they dont fit too well.
Genuine bumpers usualy fade and have a rubbery feel.  :nerd:

like above...part numbers.

Ive never come across a good copy. I think some GL's have big bumpers with no fogs? Not sure so dont hold me to that

Genuine bumpers are heavier than copies. Also they may not have the foglamp holes cut into them, that is up to you to do if you need foglamps or not. To be able to tell whether its a genuine article or not, look on top of the bumper skin and there should be a tab running along the legnth of the bumper where a seal is fitted. This seal covers the gap between the top of the bumper and the metal colour coded strip that is attached to the grille. If there is no tab, its a copy. If there is a tab, its either a good copy or an original.
But as already said, there should be a VW insignia stamped or moulded onto the back of the bumper skin behind the bumper frame.
