Title: Couple of questions... (brakes mostly)
Post by: jazzygm on 13 July 2004, 19:00
 ;D

What are the standard brake disc sizes on a mk2 valver?
Does anyone favour any particular brake pads, for every day use, so got to be reasonable when cold?
On the rear discs, there is a metal... shield ???  that has a lip which goes around the discs and only stops for the calliper... what's this called, I need to replace my disgustingly rusty ones!

What's that body colour strip above the front bumper but under the lights called, want to replace my stone chipped, rust bubbled one!  ::)

No comments on the amount of rust.. I havent begun to tell you the worst!  :-\

Standard 16v front brakes are 238mm early models, later models are 256mm.
If you have the later setup then standard kit does the job well enough.
The metal shield around the rear disc is a splash shield.

well, my front brakes are definitely larger than the rear, I assume I'll be sporting 256's on the front, 238's on the back then?

Front discs will be bigger than the rears, the rears won't be 238mm.

is that not part of the grille itself? might be different as you have a jetta lamp conversion

if your car is a 90spec it will have 256mm brakes and the larger 22.2mm master cylinder - coupled together with a decent set of pads and braided hoses will stop you fine.

as for your disk splash guards, just give them a rub down with a wire brush etc then a lick of hammerite paint
