Title: Top mounts / top plate.
Post by: Iwan on 07 March 2009, 09:10
When the car is on its wheels and fully weighted how much of a gap is the norm for the top clamping plate off the chassis. During my weekly oil check this morning noticed a gap of around 4 to 5 mmm on both sides which I have not noticed before. Is this normal or do I go for new top mounts??

thanks

i would be worried if the gap wasnt there before and you havnt removed the suspension.. however there is around a 3-4mm gap on mine after fitting coilovers and new topmounts which is normal..

the top mounts/cups are designed so if you get some "lift off" the metal cup dosen't bottom out on the inner wing causing damage (3-6mm in normal)

Any gap means the mounts are on the way out.

 so why would new mounts give a gap then? including vr6 ones?

Mine are new VR6 ones as well and I have a gap. I thought this was normal  :undecided:

they do have a gap....and as i said before 3-6mm between the metal cup and top inner wing (and the cup must have the rubber sleeve otherwise they can bang!!)

My initial question has been answered thanks, i have lowered the suspension but never mentioned it in my initial question, sorry!!
The gap could have been there before I removed he strut but i was not sure. The gap on mine is between 3 to 6 mm and if some say the mount is on the way out I will not argue with you as they have done 94K. Another job to the list for the spring!!!!!

thanks

Hi - Purchased a set of top mounts as above off e-bay, good quality and genuine!! The ride feels a tad firmer and less old car ( if you know what i mean) but still a few mm gap, but as you say at least I know they are new and will last the life time of the car!!  thanks for the info and help.

Its good to talk!!!
