As I spend a lot of time at my girlfriends parents house I looked into swapping my insurance to their house just in case the worst happened I wanted to be covered.
Now my GF lives in a nicer area than me but my insurers wanted more to change my address to her house. In the end I left it at my house as I think my car is more at risk at my home address anyway. :S
How do they work it out?

Pick a number between 1 and 49......

its stupid really
id like to kno whow they work it all out

I used to work for an insurance company and its all worked out by risk factors, so although your girlfriend may live in what you see as a nicer area than yourself in fact there may have been more reported insidences in her area than yours which would make her address more of a risk than your own.

I find that REALLY hard to believe actually(not what you said, about the reported incidents). It may be true though...

Yeah it does work something like that - it's like flood mapping on Commercial Risks - a lot is down to the likelihood of the place flooding, even if it's a small stream that's never gone anywhere near flooding, the risk is still there and it's classed as bad. Logical? No way...

its based on the first part of your postcode i believe, as there was a chart on a forum i used to go on where you looked up the first bit of ya postcode it told you what group your area is in.
chances are your missus lives in an estate that may be nice, but shares the postcode with a sh!ttier area?
my whole town is a sh!t tip apart from a few new build estates, the new build estates are in the same postcode as my house, which is rated category c, my old house in a different bracket was D rated even in a crappy area.
one of my mates at 17 insured a 1.2 fiesta at his moms house which is on the edge of town in a village of inbreds, it cost him £780. when he moved into telford itself they wanted £1600 to change his address! LOL
only place youll see a major difference is if you move into the arse end of country bumkinsville.

i got told my new house was a high risk area
i asked how and why
they explain due to " high accident and thefts etc etc "
i said thats funny - its a new ESTATE

Ditto... I had about 20% of my £525 premium added on for moving to a new estate with no history of crime.... no history AT ALL, IN FACT?

It is based on the amount of incidents in you're area, doesn't matter if its a new estate, they go on the first 3 letters of your postcode and they put in a risk category of A-F I think, i'll post a list up and ask for it to be stickied.
