Title: Not getting hot
Post by: dubber36 on 05 March 2009, 16:57
I noticed today that by 16v is not getting up to temperature.

After about 20 miles the temp gauge was only just up to 1/4 and the heater was only pumping out mildly warm air.

Any suggestions?

Probably the thermostat. No idea how to change it on a 16v MK2 but it is probably the thermostat.

If it's the same as an 8V, it's located under the water pump, 2x10mm nuts and a bucket if you've got good coolant.

Mine does the same, so I'll be tackling this later this week.

My money is on the thermostat, if not

Mildy warm air = bias valves
Slow moving gauge ?= dodgy temp sensor

According to the Haynes book of fiction, the thermostat is under the water pump.

I'll give that a go first plus some new coolant.

How much antifreeze to water? 50/50 ?

Could be an air lock.

Depends on he Antifreeze, some have a higher % of ethylene glycol.

It will have mixing instructions on the back as to what % will yield what level of protection.

IMO mix it to -35, then at least if you need to top it up with water, you won't dillute it that much.
