My missus emma is always whingin at me 2 get a new motor, mine is a mk2 gti, 1988, she keeps sayin her an her mates ave a good old laugh about it, i gonna keep it 4eva now, just 2 give her somethin else 2 whinge about, what do you reckon
-
I understand what you get.... my family ask why I run an old wreck!! (despite the fact its in better condition both mechanically and bodywise than most 5 year old cars!)
-
The problem is that to most people ours Mk2's are just 20 year old cars.
You either get dubs, or you dont.
-
I hate that!!!
I went for MOT last year and mechanic called my valver an old banger!!!!!
It's in great nick, was well annoyed.
At least on here we can all appreciate our fine motors!
-
sadly i cant call my golf reliable now well for a while at least. but it gets driven Much harder than most of mates cars and is a lot quicker than most of them  the scruffyness just makes it even more funny when they cant catch me
-
mine moans about my mk2 as well, ive said she can get her own car and she wont have to worry about it, deep down i think she loves it really
-
the simpel soultion is to declare your golf to be a TOY that way you don't have to justify anything you do to it or anything it dose. because it is a toy no one can argue against that. hell i'm thinking of buying an old omega as a daily and a trailer to drag the golf about on so i don't have to wrry about breacking it when playing.
-
thats what mine was when i bought it i have my toy and missus runs the famly bus
just couldnt get on with m plate toyota carina and decided i needed an 80s hot hatch

Same here.
Although where I am at I have Dubbers on board to argue the toss!
-
I feel sorry for you guys.
Must be really pretentious where you live. All I get is kudos for driving what obviously isn't far from a classic. (Maybe the odd remark about early mid-life crisis )
My advice is to keep keep it clean and as close to OEM as you dare. (and to the OP: There's plenty more fish in the sea )
-
Get it sparkling clean and well sorted, and if she still laughs, dump her for she clearly has no taste
-
Generally I find that anyone who appreciates cars, trip over their tongues at the sight of a nice Mk2.
Then on the other hand people who follow trends and generally don't have a clue what they're on about until the next trend comes along to give them their identity, are the ones who frown upon your shiny and well kept old Golf.

The garage where i take my MK2 love it! He did comment on it as i picked it up "I wish we could work on MK2's all the time", but they clearly have taste... They are a VW specialist, and opened their garage in like 1989 or something, and they had 'defected' from a stealership, so knew what they were talking about. Plus, they are the only garage to have worked on my car since 1990 odd, so they know the car well. In response to the original post, to most people its either :
a) young peple jealous of cool Golf, or
b) old person who remembers owning one/wanting one when they were first out.
Very few people dont understand...

A woman who i work with was saying its a bit sad going to vw 'conventions!'
After explaining for about 10mins you either get what its about or you dont she was still convinced that conventions were a bit sad, she looked a bit shocked when i told her it was no sadder than her going to bed early to read a book!

Sorry to hear that mate, my Mrs occasionally moans when I buy stuff for the car instead of for the house or pay rent
but overall she gets my vw habit.
When I met her she liked Supras and Celicas now she knows what a mk1 polo/ Audi GT looks like and will point out tasty cars when we're out (She even took a photo of a mint black mk1 when she was out as she thought I'd appreciate it!). I am considering marrying her
She liked my polo and my mk3 but she LOVES my mk2 valver as it's distinctive amongst jelly moulds, perhaps it being green is a factor too
-
The major stick I get is a few of my friend's calling it a f**kin' shoebox. Pisses me off 'cause he likes Peugeots, and wants a new Civic (even tho he doesn't drive)
-
sell it and buy a MGF, birds love that stuff.
-

gumtree has loads to pick from. they're all losers though ( but have brightened up many a dull afternoon with laughs). on the plus side they will probably be impressed you have a car.

all my cars have been over 12 years old so everyone knows the score with me and cars. as long as it looks like the car is well looked after you shouldnt get hassle from anyone except the occasional ponse
