How low would the car need to be in people's opinion to make the smaller wheels work? I was originally thinking of a -30mm drop on 18s. What drop on 17s?

tbh im on a -30mm at teh mo and its not as low as the pics thats prob around 40mm at a guess

all depends on what you want  :smiley:

the 30mm drop is quite subtle tbh but does make the car look less of a 4x4 i want to have a drop like steve_pd where there is no gap between the tyre and wheel arch  :wink:

Just another quick Q - will wheels with a 5/130 bolt pattern fit a mk4 golf with the correct adaptor?

you'll need adapters like these (http://www.dpmperformance.co.uk/hr-5130-716-14x15-wheel-adaptors-bolts-golf-4-0897-p-2654.html)
also worth to consider the offset because the adapters will lower it by aleast 15 :afro:

with 15mm adapters that will take the offset down to ET35 which should be fine, mine is ET33 with 7.5j anni rims

I don't think the -30's on 17's will look too bad at all.  Here's them on my car with the set-up you saw, but on Monty II's:-

I don't think the skinny tyres do it many favours, either!
