Just got my car back from having the driveshaft changed, and driving to work this morning, every tiny bit of standing water was throwing me onto the other side of the road. I havent driven the car in a couple of weeks so cant remember how bad it was before. The tyres aren't particular special, infact quite cheap jobs, put on to get it through an MOT by the previous owner.
Is this the case with all cheap 195s (im used to running 185s)?
getting the tracking checked at lunchtime anyway.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

The bigger area footprint the tyre has, the less weight per square inch, thus effectively, the less weight on the tyre, so the less penetrative force the tyre has through the water. Cheap tyres do not help and the better more expensive tyres are designed to overcome this problem with the tread pattern design.
But you also say that the drive shaft has been replaced, so the first thing for you to do is to check the wheel alignment. Your wheels may have been already sliding before your little skating expedition across the road.

i got 205's on my golf and it doesn't aquaplane any more then any other FWD car i have owned
i would have the alignment set , just incase they had to remove the hub to press the shaft out from the wheel bearing
this would make the camber off and them maybe it would drive like a pig

I run 205s or 195s but no aquaplaning - as above, its your tyres/alignment - not the actual width of the tyre, otherwise my pops 295s would be skating all over town.
Get a tyre with a deep V (Rainsports FTW ) and you'll only ever want to drive in the rain

must say though my tyres are Toyo Proxis T1R'S
not cheap poop
-
Those are what i am looking at getting :)
-
they are AWSOME
no wheel spin , loads of cornering grip
and i'm hoping they will last a track day at Assen next month

Cool, best price i've got so far is 47 quid fitted :)
-
thats cheap
what size ??
mine are 205/50/15
and cost me 50 euro plus tax
i fitted them myself
-
195/50/15 :)
-
stick some 205's on it
fatboy tyres

My old Mk2 had 195/50/15 Yokohama Prada spec 2's which were brilliant in all conditions.
My new one has 185/55/15 BF Gooodrich Profiles and they aquaplane much more.
I guess it's down to the tyres.

avon ZV3 or 5 or whatever there on now are a good in the wet as well
-
I learned this lesson with my first car - a vauxhall nova. It used to aquaplane BAD. Fitting the best tyres I could afford solved the problem.
Just a note about Toyo's... I'm on my first set of TR1's and am NOT impressed with the longevity. I reckon they'll just about last a year, which is around 8000 miles for me. :undecided:
-
there not meant to last that long. they are a soft grip orinatated tyer. all goes to plan i should have killed mine by next week
-
if you think T1R's are bad
try a set of yokohama's
-
i got 195 50 15s Poo Poo ( Ceat ) tyres on mine,
Think they are going to last thousands, cos they are rarely in cotanct witht he gorund when its wet

I never liked my poxies, got rid of them sharpish

Cheap tyres are like cheap condoms, you'll end up paying in the long run!!
