Title: Is this bad?
Post by: ian24driver on 04 March 2009, 21:47

Right, having changed my oil breather pipe(the long one) i noticed as i pulled the old one off the bottom of the engine a piece of the copper pipe was stuck inside some sort of plastic housing!!. to the right of the dipstick if you looking to the rear of the car. As i tried to pull this out, i pushed it in never to be seen again. Just wondered if i need to get this out somehow or will it be ok? mk3 8v.

Also, found loads of white mayo in the split breather and around the oil cap, the car isnt loosing water. Im sure ive read on here that with the cold weather and short journeys that this can be normal. I only do 3 miles to work in the morning so it barely gets up to temp. Thinking a eng flush and oil change would be good now the freezing weather has calmed down .
Thanks

I have not read the whole post  :embarassed: but i can tell you that the mayo you are getting is emulsification, (oil and water mix) this will be because your split breather pipe is allowing moisture in and is mixing with the oil.

Its nothing to worry about, replace any split breathers, give the offending bits a clean and dont worry

Also as you have said, short journeys dont help either....... give it a good thrash every now and again to get it hot and blow the cob webs out

Thanks, replaced the breather at the weekend(£3 from the scrap yard rather than £40 from vw). Giving it a oil change tomorrow which will make it better. Will still give it a thrash down the A52 every week or so then!
