What makes you think its not a GTI? Like Vix says - it will state it on the log book if it is.

Dinx, if you go on confused.com and look to get an insurance quote, you can put in your registration number of your car or the car you might be buying for example, and it will tell you what the car should be etc. Just don't do what I did and put in the wrong number when the registration I put in came up as a Polo  :o Luckily it was my typo  :-[

if the engine plate on the slam pannel starts with dx then it would of definatly had a 1.8i engine in it.
i was talking to some one yesterday who said the cabrio's got baged gti mostly for uk so not many foreign 1.8's got the gti badge

i'll give that site 10/10. pity i had to put in so much info to get that far.

it got my 1906VC plate perfectly. i was hoping it was going to tell me what the original car was to be honest.

Oops, that's probably why it's called confused.com  :D I never said it was an exact science but it came up with the correct details for my car. I I can't explain Dinx's details but maybe G6dub's registration used to be on a passat and then was swapped to the limited as a private reg and someones database is not up to date, maybe  ???

I wish that was the reason cause it would explain it but I bought teh plate from DVLA and I am teh first owner of it!

I also put in G6DUB and it still comes up with the seat, it was taken off that in May so no it isn't upto date.

don't worry about it.
i reckon the likelihood of the dvla providing regular updates to these insurance sites is very low. it's only trying to be helpful anyway, it's not saying the dvla have that reg as definiely being x

You may all want to have a look at this site:

www.vinfinder.com

I was gonna try out the sms service before I buy my next car. Apparently you text them the full 17digit VIN and they will reply with all the details of what the car should be. Sounds like the best way as it eliminates all the uncertainty arising from importing and plate changes etc etc.
I haven't tried it yet so can't vouch for its accuracy but if anyone does give try it be sure to let us know how it goes. I think the service costs about ?1.50

A gti engine will basically look like this

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=11384&pos=3

except on the mk1 there will a fuel metering unit on top of the air box.
the difference between carb and injection engines is quite obvious when ya look  :D
