Title: rotary buffers
Post by: trousers on 02 March 2009, 13:12

just a quick question, someone told me once that rotary buffers can cause swirl marks on your paint, is this true does anyone know

cheers rob

the ones you can get from halfords for about £40 with a bonnet on them to apply/buff polish don't normally do much more than spread polish about and can inflict swirl marks

the proper use of a DA polisher like the megs 220 or a rotary in the hands of someone trained will help to eliminate swirls with the correct pad/polish combo

I used my rotary at the weekend and it has removed all the roughness to the paint (far better than claying did) and has eliminated loads of swirl marks (and that was using a menzerna finishing compound). I guess without care and incorrect prep they could spread contaminents very fast making swirls (hence why i washed and clayed first)
Oh yeah my arms ache from the hard work!!

i think the OP was referring to something like this...

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_189810_langId_-1_categoryId_165640 (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_189810_langId_-1_categoryId_165640)

and not a more advanced polisher with interchangeable pads etc

i wouldnt bother taking it back out the box tbh, get an orbital polisher as said above

rotorys are for pro's and can cause expensive damage if not used by an experienced person.

I have one and very impressed, though I am selling it due to not managing to find time to use it!

The ones from Halfords are oscillating buffers, so can't see how they wouldn't be any good or worse than another orbital/oscillating one from another manufacture.

Because they are poorly made. The decent ones such as the megs and the PC are well weighted with correct speed settings.

Just because ebay engine mods are cheap and look the same as expensive parts doesnt mean you use them does it!

Ditch the woolies one, about as useful as a chocolate tea pot!

Yes I did see the prices on that website!

Was asking Golfdan if price he can get them for included the goodies like! Or just for the machine.

Len

That price is just the machine including postage.

However I would match £139.99 posted (don't know how much clean your cars postage is)

There was a thread on another forum I go on and someone on there said he worked for a company that sold orbital polishers mail order and they were haveing a faulty megs one back at least once a week and he recommended the Kestrel one which is why I put the link for that one up, as said would like to hear what others think although I've hear'd that the Porter one is the best all round.

Think the Megs problems have been solved with teh second generation. I have the Kestrel one and really need to use it...

i've just bought one similar to this off a guy in work, we always use these with G3 compound to buff our cars and the finish is excellent

a lot cheaper than some that are being mentioned
