If you drive it hard.
Just to warn the swarm of secondhanders that are trying to buy a Mk5 GTI.

Have you tried 2nd gear?

Yes, and then when u take it out of reverse and engage fwd gears, the economy gets better!!!
TBH, if I drive mine "spiritedly" I average 28mpg. In normal "road conditions" driving, I average 33mpg all day long. On the motorway at a steady 80mph, 36mpg is normal, Just to balance the argument...........

Im on the motorway most of the time to and from work, where I will drive relatively relaxed, although it is stop/start sometimes.
Hopefully, by the end of the week I'll still have some in the tank to burn ;)
I do around 280 miles a week, and as long as I get at least a full weeks worth out of a single tank, I'll be happy ;)
On another note, how much does it roughly cost to fill the tank these days??

Roughly about the price indicated on the fuel station pump, multiplied by the quantity of litres delivered by said pump! :smug:

I don't know! I just fill the bast@rd up, and load up my credit card! :embarassed:

load up my credit card!
pretty much summed the whole golf 5 ideal up in one there
-
19mpg is not bad if your honest with driving it hard.

Yebut - I can actually afford to pay it off in full each month!
Keep em coming Sharpie - I actually enjoy your witty banter!

I agree.
Incidentally, I've done some v-max mpg tests on various cars (but not the GTI), and the FSI fuel system has proven to be to actually be more fuel efficient than manifold injection. Anyone interested in my results?
-
Yes please....
-
OK, first car I did it on was a 180bhp MSD tuned 2.5V6 Vectra GSI - flat out (think v-max was about 150mph) gave just 5.5 mpg.    That had manifold multipoint sequential injection, and a Bosch ME 3.1.1 engine management. (Very good aerodynamics help to get a got top speed in this).
Next was my former Audi B6 S4 - 4.2 V8 all-alloy engine, 344bhp. V-max was a genuine 162mph, and this gave 6.8 mpg. Again, manifold multipoint sequential injection, with a Bosch ME 7.1 ecu.
And my current Audi B7 RS4 - again with the 4.2 all-alloy V8 engine, but with the 4 valve heads and FSI, and 420bhp. V-max is a genuine 171mph, and this was much better at 9.8mpg. But the FSI system uses cylinder-direct fuel injectors, fed from a very high pressure 'common rail' fuel line. And as well as them squirting sequentially, they can also multi-pulse per combustion cycle. The ecu is a Bosch MED 9.1, but due to the high revs of the RS4, it actually needs TWO ecus, working on a 'master and slave' principle (both ECUs double up on certain tasks, but certain tasks are specific to either the master module or the slave module).
Finally, all speeds were verified with either one or two GPS units, and the mpg, whilst initially taken from the cars in-built trip computer, was manually verified using old skool calculations.
So, the FSI really does deliver the economy compared to the older manifold injection. My B6 S4 and B7 RS4 are virtually identical aerodynamically (OK, the RS4 is slightly better in front and rear spoiler designs, but then looses out to the S4 with its 'wide' bodyshell, and wider tyres which can notably alter aerodynamics). And weight-wise, they both have a similar kerb weight of 1755 kg, and would have had similar interior loads.
Oh, and the Mk5 GTI also has the same Motronic MED 9.1, but has just one ECU.

oh bless him

19 mpg! you must seriously be ragging the nuts off her! Thats Focus ST economy and we all know how terrible that is on your pocket.
I took a 200 mile round trip over the weekend which involved some great ragging round country lanes and i averaged just under 36 mpg in my standard GTI. I was impressed with that.
Taking a trip down to Holland in May with the wife (visiting inlaws ) and i am hopeful of getting 40 mpg.......
-
36mpg!!
Thats pretty good!
-
Yeah i am well pleased with the mpg. Its actually better than my previous Clio 182 which surprised me. I guess thats what you get with 16 valve cars. Turbo for the win
I put it down to using the correct gear at all times and obviously not ragging it all the time. I certainly wouldnt say i was driving miss daisy driver i just dont see the point in ragging my GTI to death

+1. I had cruise control fitted (courtesy of vrStu :nerd:) and drove to Brum and averaged 26mpg but on the way back, because of traffic I sat at 60mph most of the time and got around 38mpg (had to overtake some trucks of course!).
-
The mpg of the GTI is better then I had expected - with usual casual driving of course. Obviously the more you thrash it, the lighter your wallet becomes! lol
