Title: Mk7 details in Autoexpress
Post by: Egbutt Wash on 01 March 2009, 15:57
This weeks Autoexpress had pictures of the Mk7 Golf.
Lighter, smaller and stronger than the Mk5/6.
With some great engine options.
On sale two years earlier than anticipated.

Not sure why they bothered with the Mk6.

The mk6 was launched as the mk5 was too expensive for Vw to make and they needed to cut costs.

Like adding extra gristle to cumberland sausages.

Exactly, the Mk6 had to be launched because the quality of the Mk5 was not up to scratch internally plus as stated it cost to much to build.

That Autoexpress artical doesn't mention anything "quoted from VW" so I would take that with a pinch of salt. The Mk6 should be seen as a facelifted Mk5 rather than a new model. In fact the Mk6 is what the Mk5 should of been from day one.

I thought the Mk6 was launched because the build time of the Mk5 was 60 hours compared to the Focus taking 17

It might look nicer, but I do wonder what corners are cut below the surface if they can get the build time down to 20 hours for the Mk6.

You lot sound surprised they're working on the MK7 already, they've probably had a small team working on it for a year or so by now.

You can't honestly think they start working on it 6 months before launch?  mind you...  :lipsrsealed:

Like the rear in those pictures, but from the side some of the lines remind me of the 1 series BMW especially the shape of the windows.  The front is quite bland but this is what the new passat headlights seem to be like so can see them sticking with a similar design.

Hope they don't produce that ugly duck. It's certainly got a beak.
It will destroy any semblance of design continuity IMO.

And as far the Vauxhall Arsetra VXR is concerned, it might look good, but chav it is and chav it will always be. The over-styling will grate after sometime. An over-styling exercise in the extreme is the Honda Type R GT. Also, as is usual with hot Arsetras, they can never put all that power onto the road. Pointless playing the numbers game.

I quite like to look of it tbo

Although I'm tempted to miss a gernation of golf next time I buy a car. Maybe I'll just buy a nearly new mk6 GTi with Bi-Xenons and rear LED's etc in a couple of years time. Or maybe an R or a Rocco (spit).

Remember this article is from 2009, so IMO it's not the car that we will see in 18 or so months.

Personal opinion - I loved the mark 1, liked the mark 2, it then went downhill. Even the looks of the mark 4 took time to grow on me, but it was not powerful enough (GTi). With the mark 5, I think VW realised that they could build a hot hatch which will appeal to family men/women etc, and things were back on track. The mark 6, for me, is a cosmetic improvement which is expected during evolution. But my initial thoughts of the mark 7 remind me of the days where VW went backwards cosmetically.
Anyone else agree, or do I need to visit Specsavers

The usual press speculation about the next Golf. Sells magazines.

I can't see a mk 7 GTI before 2013 at the earliest.

I know the feeling!!! By the rate Golf are going up a base model will be £35k by the time the mk7 gets here!
To be perfectly honest though, I sincerely reckon that the mk7 will again be a heavily facelifted mk5. To come to this unscientific conclusion I have based it on the fact that the new Jetta is just the old Jetta with a big facelift and, by the sounds of it, some Passat parts chucked underneath. The new Passat is really the previous Passat. The new Polo is just the old Polo with a slightly lighter bodyshell and the new corporate face and dash plastics. You get my drift?
With the way Golf prices are going, I hope that the next Leon is a beauty as even that is heading into expensive territory but may still be more affordable than a Golf. Either that or my existing Golf (bought ex-demo and way before all the price hikes) will have to last me until I retire and get my bus pass!!!

Well Andy,

It's my bus pass that got me into this tortured mess. Now I can neither ride in a bus or drive the car.

Maybe if I had paid for the trip the driver would have taken more care?

They say you get what you pay for. I paid fcuk all and ended up fcuked up!

Now that's not cricket old chap.

It's bound to look Golfy, but also designed to look like a poor man's Audi.  The Mk5 GTI looked too good and nicked sales from Audi, Walter De Silva soon took care of that and came up with the rather bland design for the Mk6 GTI.

If it is to be shown at Frankfurt at the end of this year then we should see a special edition Mk6 or two about now.  Then the run out models full of leather and gadgets at no extra cost.

Just looks cheap! They had a good thing going with their styling all through the product range when they brought out the Mk5 but I wouldnt buy anything they make at the moment purely on the looks. Id rather have a megane and thats built by surrender monkeys!
