I'm being told that Dunlop sport maxis (spl?) came as standard on edition 30's when new, is this correct?
Cheers!
-
Not all came with Dunlops. Mine came with Continental sport contact 2's.
-
Thanks!

My 06 GTI came with Contis, my 07 Ed30 came with Dunlop ShyteMax, can't remember what the 56 plate R32 came with, my present Ed30 came with Michelin Pilot Exaltos and my wife's 08 R32 has Dunlop ShyteMax. In order of preference...
1. Contis - superb grip and the best tyre out of the lot, although they wear fast. Mine lasted 13k miles on a standard GTI, while the Michelins lasted 28k miles on my present Ed30
2. Michelins - excellent grip, but not as good as the Contis. Last forever.
3. Dunlop ShyteMax - why do they put this tyre on GTI/R32s?! As the name suggests, its a seriously shyte tyre from my experience and I am sure a lot of you will agree. It was so bad that when I got my first Ed30, it was under-steering like a pig and finding it hard to keep traction. I thought it was the Ed30, but it was the Dunlops. Even my wife's R32 loses a bit of traction going round corners when slightly pushes which is ridiculous. Truly rubbish tyres.
I currently have Michelin Pilot Sports on my Ed30 and they are the dogs danglies    Way better than all the above. Bye bye wheel spin...

Yup - agreed.
Following on from the thread discussing the kick-down in the DSG - when I next got hold of the GTI, I had some serious <cough> experimentation <cough> with the kickdown. From 35mph in 6th gear, floored the throttle on a damp road, and it kicked straight down to 2nd - so 2nd gear acceleration with WOT - on a damp road = absolutely zero wheelspin. Experimented with the TCS on or off, uphill or down - and zero wheelspin. Yet when Robin reported back, with his Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics, he was getting wheelspin in 3rd!
So I really don't get how the F1 Asym can be 'better' than the Mich PS2?

To be fair RR is remapped, so somewhat more power than standard.
-
once worn in... the Goodyears F1's are a great tyre! The difference between these and the sportmaxx is day and night. PS2's equally as good I would say but I found them to wear quite quickly.
-
Why on earth did VW fit rubbish tyres to some Edition 30 cars?
I would not be suprised to see Barums on them. (Although I have a car shod with Barums and they are not bad.)

Erm, it is only torque that causes wheelspin, not power. And the simple fact that I was in 2nd gear WOT, whereas Robin was in 3rd WOT - then I would have been applying more torque at the wheels than Robin was.
Google 'torque multiplication' if you don't beleive me.

What car have you used the PS2s on then? :undecided:

Because although Dunlops are shyte, they are still actually classed as a 'premium brand' tyre - in the same pidgeon hole as say Michelin, Continental, Dunlop, Brigestone, etc.

Who knows! They currently also factory fit Kumhos and Firestone to their lesser models!

Well my power isn't standard either - around 320bhp and we both have a Quaife fitted
