Title: STOLEN
Post by: sixpot on 28 February 2009, 10:04
Had the house broken into last night, and the keys to my car were taken along with loads of other stuff, so if you see a mk 5 golf GTI 3 door in steel grey with the reg T2 LBB, then either let me know or contact the police.
Thanks

As others have commented, gutted for you, and hope no personal trauma has been suffered.

But what general neck of the woods are you based?  I know that some cars can be stolen at one end of the country and used for a 'job' at the opposite end - but there are probably a few dimwits who still might try using it in your local area.

Post by: stealthwolf on 28 February 2009, 13:07
Don't keep your keys under your pillow or, like others have experienced, you're likely to get someone enter your bedroom and hold you/family at gunpoint and ask for the keys. Car are replaceable, families aren't.

Let's organize ourselves in a grid like pattern and mobilize ourselves to find the barsteward and kick his head in..... Sorry strike that, report him to the local bobbies. You would think with facebook and twitter and intelligent phones there is something we could do..... Like they do for lost dogs :-) good luck mate

FWIW, regarding the mobilising of "infantry" with car theft, you may recall this link -

A PERFECT example of how the Internet assisted in recovering this poor chap's Skyline.

Awesome read - even if you've seen it before :)

Sorry to hear about this... and know about it first hand as we had two crack 'edz who tried this at mine. Dont worry about the car mate, its more important that your family are safe and unscathed.

p.s You dont really want the car back! let the insurance pay for a new one after all it is what we pay them silly money for

Cheers for the thoughts guys (and claire lol!) yep I hope I never get to see the car again in all honesty, book value is what they normally pay, but what exactly is book value?  I have access to CAP and glasses valuations via HPI tradeweb, so which price am i looking at, retail value or trade in?

Right then quick update, the Police have found the car, and they say it appears undamaged, but I guess until I see it myself then I'm not getting my hopes up.
The Police have been really helpful today, and I think a little bit of faith has been restored in them from my point of view.

Did you take out a GAP policy?

yeah i would say take out gap policy and don't park too near your house, so unless they meticulously watch you it's too much hassle to work out where the car is based!!!!

i really do wish though, they'd give out heavier sentences for this type of thing

most people on here for example spend every penny they have getting a nice car, i know i did but all they think is "if they can afford it then it don't matter"!!!!!!!

it would be nice to run over their foot or something as punishment [going about 70 mph though]

OK, UK insureres must only use prices to change.  So if you had a fully loaded GTI, then they must provide a payout which could see the insured in an identical car of identical spec.  So if they try to use any 'trade' values, then they are pulling a fast one.

Anyway, good news that your car has now been found.

Cheers for that, makes me feel a little better, as I still don't know the condition of the car yet, I was requested to bring the spare key down to the holding pound so the Police can gain entry to do their stuff (car was recovered locked up) I asked if I could see the car, but was denied access, as public aren't allowed into the storage area.

Post by: DanoGTI on 03 March 2009, 11:11
That's good news then :)

Hope it's not damaged in any way. By the sounds of it (by no means an authority on this type of thing!), the car had been stolen ready to be used in something bigger....

If it HAD have been used, it would have been torched by now, I would have thought.

The same thing happened to my old car - thieves had taken it to a known area where the cars get torched. Thankfully the barrier on the access lane was down, so it was dumped!.
Still cost a lot to get it fixed. Got shot straight afterwards.

Hope it all gets sorted for you.

Dan :)

i remember seeing on some road wars epsidoe or something that the theives sometimes park, lock and leave the car in a typical (but out of the way) parking spot for a few days to see if it had a tracker on it - if the car is gone when they come back the next day then its likely that it had a tracker on it or the police were just thorough doing their jobs.

probably a load of tosh though

glad its back and fingers crossed it doesn't feel violated whenever your in it from now on

Surely if criminals wait to see if it's tracked, then the best thing would be for the police to monitor the car and then catch the thieves, perhaps breaking into a criminal circle?

It's what I would have done. Good to know your car's back.

Well it is good that the Bill are taking it seriously.

And at the end of the day, IF the car is damaged in any way, the insurers will only have to pay a small amount for the repairs, rather than a mega-bucks 'total loss' claim for a stolen and not recovered.  Whilst any claim on insurance is a bit of a 'black mark', insurers really do seem to hate total loss claims, and really sting you hard come renewal time.

And the other bonus, if you do decide not to keep her, then at least you can get rid of in your own time at your own convenience - rather than hurring round trying to find something to replace it in a rush.

Keep us updated.

Firstly, very sorry to hear this has happened!

I've just test drove and bought my first GTI and am a bit worried about leaving the car outside the house and maybe will keep it in the garage.

I just wondered how the people that stole your car got the keys? Was it a break and entry or was a door unlocked, any house alarm etc? Or was no-one in making that irrelevant? Sorry if this is a bit too personal and feel free to PM answer or ignore me. :)

Glad to hear you got it back, usually never see a car again. My dad never did.

When someone broke into my house for the Ed30 the keys are always kept upstairs, learnt from experience that they spot them on the work tops etc and head straight for them, got the keys to the Passat mind, couldnt start it though....f'kin toerags.

Isn't it better that they find the keys than put a knife to your throat to get them though?

Would debadging help make the car less desirable to thieves?

Am hoping keeping the GTI in the garage will keep it safe as unless someone follows me home or happens past when I'm leaving, then they won't know what's in the garage.

If I had a big enough drive I'd buy an old banger to keep outside as a decoy.

Wish I wasn't a worrier!

I need to buy a garden shed so I can clear out my garage, but I will deffo be keeping the car in the garage most of the time. I have an electric garage door and its pretty impossible to open the garage door without the remote, unless you cut a hole in it and operate it from the inside! No keyholes in the door - nothing. Made sure it was going to be secure before I had it put in a few weeks back. Also had all the windows and the front door to my house changed just before Xmas, so they are also pretty damn secure. On top of that, although I dont have a house alarm, I have small alarms at the front and back doors, so if they are opened a high pitched alarm goes off straight away.

I always keep my keys in the cupboard, in my room upstairs, along with the garage door remotes, and my wallet! If some fcuker is gonna try get at any car, they'll have to get through a heavy door or window, the alarm, and then me, and the steel bar under my bed, first ;)

Later on in the year I'll be buying another cheaper car, maybe a used A Class or somet, for the wife, which will be parked in the drive in front of the garage, to double the protection ;) lol. Pretty sure I've got all bases covered, but then again, you never know with these thieving scumbags.

Although the area I live in is pretty secure and burglary etc is a rare occurance, as I said, you can never be too safe in todays world. Sad, but true.

I live in a very low crime rate area, I have mine on the driveway at the moment as the garage is full of crap!
But I get a bit paranoid if I hear a slight noise outside at night as its always so quiet where I live.
I park my girlfriends saxo infront of it for the extra security and sometimes my dads infront of that! No buggers goina wanna make the effort to grab it then I reckon!!

Yup.

I reckon so.  And a more 'boring' colour like reflex silver will be less eyecatching compared to say red.

Am hoping keeping the GTI in the garage will keep it safe as unless someone follows me home or happens past when I'm leaving, then they won't know what's in the garage.

Get a decent Tracker fitted then - www.Tracker.co.uk - then if anyone does nick it, not only will you get your car back, but you are highly likely to see the scumbags behind bars too.

My car is usually trapped in by 2 other cars now so be pretty difficult to get at it, all the doors have had extra latches put on them only being able to open them from the inside and some kind of special locks so if they do use mole grips on it them it snaps into place, leaving the door locked.

Thats how they got in before by snapping the locks on the conservatory. We also have a house alarm which doesnt seem to deter some people, cctv and the gate is always chained up.

Used o have a post in the ground until the police took it as evidence.

Got a nice big machette under the bed too.

Is the GTI well secure in itself?
Title: Re: STOLEN
Post by: DanoGTI on 13 March 2009, 19:08
I've got to admit, I've been through the whole car-theft paranoia thing :( Had several high-powered Scoobs.

Had an alarmed garage with heat sensors, pressure pads, and microwave sensors etc..... the cars used to come out to be washed etc, then get put straight back in. With Wifey's cr@ppy Ibiza put in front.

Quite frankly, with my current car (S4), my attitude is that I've got a wife and 2 kids. Keys are left downstairs. IF they want the car, they can take it. Family is MUCH more important. It's a piece of metal.

Doesn't make it acceptable nor enjoyable to have a car theft (I've had 2 thefts, 1 non-recoverable), but not worth the grief to be greeted with with a masked man sporting a hammer or worse.

Mind you, they'll have to get past the dog and the wife first!!!LOL!!

You need the key to start the car as it's got an immobiliser.

Exactly. If they want it, they'll take it. And no amount of bravado is going to get in their way. That's why you pay a fortune in insurance - peace of mind. Use it.

Title: Re: STOLEN
Post by: Edition30 on 13 March 2009, 23:45
Its a shame that we have to put up with little theiving phuckwits. People spend alot of time and money getting a nice car and even more on premiums when it gets stolen. Its ok saying use your insurance but it costs you even more on something that shouldnt have happened in the first place.

Copper said its a shame we didnt shoot the little runts who tried stealing mine.
Title: Re: STOLEN
Post by: DanoGTI on 13 March 2009, 23:58
True. But there's little you can do about it. I can only speak personally but while it galls me to pay the premiums, I would rather pay the potential extra than run the risk of getting hurt, or my family getting hurt.

Thankfully, each year so far , my premiums have always gone down.

I'm also in the fortunate position that the car crime is pretty low where I live (in the countryside!), but I do accept there are problems elsewhere. The police are relatively powerless due to lack of resources to catch these little/organised twunts.

THEY know where all the security is, so there's little point in having it tbh!!LOL! Trackers. Pah. Been there, got the T shirt. Found it pretty quickly too

The only thing that we can do is to be vigilant and responsible. And hope it never happens :(

Dan :)
