Title: f**kING fatherless son ( shes back wahoo )
Post by: jonnyturbo on 27 February 2009, 19:11
Well as you know today was the day i was MEANT to be getting my down pipe and sports cat fitted. Well all was going well until the mechanic came and said Mr Nicholson can you follow me we have a problem with the turbo. Got under my car and he said we have snapped the stud in the turbo that the exhaust bolts to. And said the other three studs have no thread left on them ( as if by magic the studs have lost there thread ( more like they have forced them off the fatherless sons ). They admitted they had snapped the stud. So the solution was to remove turbo tap the stud out and renew other three ( four new studs ) . They said i have to pay 4 hours labor so they can remove the turbo. I am well pissed off. Left my car there and said FIX IT pronto. I know i am in the right but can people tell me there veiws on this please thankyou

so you have to pay for them to fix a problem they caused? Not likely. If the bolts weren't coming off they shouldn't have forced them

I would never pay the extra their asking as it's their problem they snapped the bolts!

Yes certainly dont pay for a problem they caused. Definitely not.  Get up ealry and go and find a Citizen's Advice Bureau- most are open Saturday mornings i think.  Get some legislation on your side, and then def call Treading Standards- do it anyway- they prob do it to loads of people. I reported Experian to the TS the other week for some scam they tried to pull on the GF- if enough people do it, things will happen.

Im going against the grain here
have any of you actually tried to remove a turbo nut without shearing the stud? well i sheared one on my golf, when we do it on the buses in work nearly every turbo you do you get at least one that snaps due to the heat that there subjected too. on the golf you have limited access and it's very easy to damage them.  the only thing they should have done is pre warn you that it's a possibilty think there doing you a bit of as deal as 4 hours to remove drill and retap the turbo manifold is very quick however you do have cause to complain if they didnt pre warn you

"waits for abuse coming my way "

I kind of agree with you there but didn't wanna start a big hoo haa over it!

It is an unforseen problem that cannot really be avoided, as you say the constant expansion and contraction in that area can weaken the bolt and sieze up the thread. If they were to allow enough time on every similar job to re tap then the price would be very high. Instead they have (presumably) given you a reasonable price and had to alter that due to the problem that has arisen (sp.)

At the end of the day there only doing there job, maybe by being reasonable (not saying you haven't) about it you may be able to settle with sharing the mis fortune and paying 50% of the labour?

To be honest it is a tw@t of a job to do, when i used to take front pipes off to the turbo we used to warm the nuts and threds slightly but this is hard to do on some cars due to lake of space, as alreay said they, been a garage you would expect them to have experience of this and pre warn you. Possibly best option is to say that to them and try and just go 50/50 and pay for 2 hrs labour.

Just think if you had attempted it yourself on your back on the drive and they had snapped!!! The problem is now theres to fix.

Hope all goes well bud.

i have to agree with the last three comments i know what a job it is i suppose i was fortunate mine all came off ok but its harsh expecting jonny to have to cough up for their labour charge when they have caused the problem and admitted to it also in the first instance from what jonny has told me he easnt forwarned and now is minus his car needless to say we are both going over to sort his problem out tomorrow and IT WILL BE SORTED! thanks for all your comments and advice im sure jonny will be posting up what happens over the weekend to let you all know how it goes
