As you've probably guessed I'm on the hunt for an edition 30. At first I had my heart set on a DSG version but having read a few reviews on remapping it seems that manuals can take a lot more punishment than DSG boxes and as I'm looking at keeping my forthcoming ed 30 for a long time I am now wondering about long term longevity. So my question is which is the safest choice when going down the long term tuning route (330 bhp) manual or DSG? Discuss....

Drive both, pick your preference. Uprated kit for the DSG will become more readily available.. but you can't expect even a manual clutch to last a lifetime when you're talking about throwing that much torque at it, so budget for upgrading either at some point in the future. Mod within your means, always be prepared to shell out for new parts if/when something breaks.

Had mine running 330bhp and 360+lb/ft for 27k now without one hiccup mate and runs as good as new..
Regarding clutches, I am yet to hear of anyone (in this country anyway) having to replace there clutch on the DSG due to being mapped etc. I know of at least 3 peeps on here with manuals that have had to though....
As Toph says, drive both and make your decision, but I wouldn't get put off by any of the scaremongering about DSG boxes blowing up once over 300lb/ft as it's total horsesh!te..

All you read is people talking about how weak the DSG boxes are .... but no one seems to know of one that has gone bang !
The tuners certainly are not bothered by high torque levels on DSG boxes ....
As has been shown above there are more than a few people with high torque remaps on DSG edition 30's with no issues at all.

Shhhh everyone tell him the DSG's are rubbish and buy my manual :nerd:

get a real car :lipsrsealed: manual  not an old mans auto  oh and it will need a clutch if you map it  mine did

Wot he said! :afro:
Mine has over 330bhp and I've yet to have clutch issues

Yup leaning towards manual at the moment. I've had a go in both and although the DSG feels quicker I know after a while I'll become lazy and just stick it into D all the time..... manuals are also about £800/£1k cheaper than DSG's plus I also have a HPA shortshift kit left over from my old MK4 R32 which I've just discovered will fit the ed30
My thoughts are save the £800 for mods instead.

or keep it standard with dsg, and STILL be quicker off the lights then the 300 hp boys and listen for the faint wheel squeel from them SLOW stick shifters
opps....... incoming RPG detected
oh that nasty slope thats hard to resist
Being serious, anything you do, whether being only stage 1 or any performance enhancing WILL reduce live expectancy of anything on the car.
You pay your money and take a chance, but be prepared if anything gives up the ghost to pay up as most warrantys wont cover it.
Fab car mapped or standard

i think clutch wear is a lot to do with driving style mapped or not , dont drive with your foot resting on the peddle , and change down gears to accelerate if you just floor it in 6 th at 2 k rpm all your torque is killing your clutch, a dsg will change down so you need to in the manual !!!!

Yup, agreed. The nut holding the steering wheel is usually the most problematic.

Not applicable on a DSG  - but agreed for a manual.

Hummmm - it is the LOWER gears where the torque is multiplied - which is why you are more likely to get clutch slip in lower gears before higher gears. But if you do get slip in 6th, then your clutch is well and truely toasted.
