Title: MFD2 Updated DVD/TV Tuner
Post by: davoaj on 26 February 2009, 21:18
Evening all

I've had a quick search of the forum but couldn't find anything on this, please forgive me if it's dealt with somewhere and I've missed it!

My mate is picking up his R32 on saturday, it's an 07 3 door in black with leather and the MFD2. Looking forward to having a go but trying to give him a few pointers in the meantime.

Besides paying >£100 for an update disc is there any other way to obtain updates? Would it be worth his while asking the dealer to update it before he picks the car up or does the dvd have to remain in the head unit?

Also, he's interested in upgrading it so he can watch dvd's and pick up tv on it. Is this possible?

Sorry if the answers are obvious, but just trying to help a mate out who is making the move from an R53 Mini Cooper S to the R32!! He'll no doubt be on here before long, we all seem a lot more active on here than over on R32OC.

Cheers

Seems doubtful. I had DVD in the last car and rarely used it. I always have my iphone with me with stuff on if im bored anyway!

Im looking at the rns510 next for the R, im not even getting it for th eNAV as my garmin is good at that, it just looks so damn nice

DVD needs to be in the unit to operate the Sat Nav. You can buy an a newer disc as there is no other way of upgrading the system.

If you want to play music, you can either use the unit single slot (but first removing the Nav disc) or a CD Multichanger which is located in the centre armrest, or you can have an iPod connector in there instead.

If you want to hook up any other media/audio, there is a Aux input at the rear of the unit (needs removing to locate it) and you could connect a TV receiver or other input here (eg reversing camera or external audio).

The MFD2 works perfectly fine but is a bit basic by modern Sat Nav standards and only has functions such as 2D display and limited functionality with iPod (no track/artist names etc). You can either live with it or upgrade to the RNS510 touchscreen unit.

He’s had a word with the dealer who is going to try and sort him out with something. I’m not holding my breath!

Incidentally has anyone had any dealings with Cheltenham VW? I’m going down with him to collect the car tomorrow, should be a good drive home – 135 miles back up north in the fully fuelled R32!

Well he picked it up today, and what can I say?

It's awesome, totally different car to the GTi to drive. Do find myself tempted to see how much it would cost to swap for one, but not sure if I don't just have new car envy!!

I think with a remap and maybe the indulgence of an RNS510 that I would be happy to stick with the GTI.

But then when you factor in a second service due in April (£225), two new tryes needed soon (£260), the cost of Revo (£450), a milltek (about £400) and the Rns510 (£850) maybe buying an .:R32 would actually save me money.....

Well I had a bit of a blast against it last night on some slippery country roads. Needless to say I had to really push hard to keep up with it and didn't stand much of a chance from standing starts or even rolling starts in the wet.

I am very tempted but financially I think I'd just have to take too big of a hit on the GTI to do it.

I need to get out there and meet some fellow GTI owners who've had a remap and get a trial sorted at Awesome GTI to see if that will make me happier.

Problem with the R32 is that I would want one with recaros and sat nav and they're still demanding a bit of a premium. With mine listed at £10890 for part ex on parkers, I've pretty much ruled out a change.

Come on guys ebcourage me to stick with the GTI!!

You can buy and get the sat nav fitted for £800. Recaros are very hard to get hold of..... and do command a small premium. But a std R32 you could get for around 13k

Ha ha!

This is killing me, I was more than happy with the GTI and then I pursuaded my mate to get one instead of a BMW 130. I've really shot myself in the foot!

Silver 08 one in Bolton for £18k with recaros
