Anyone know anything of these?? Just stumbled across these guys, DDI, who, a few years back said they would be making backlit dials for the mk2, which I personally would be interested in them, but they needed 15 people for it to be worthwhile for them, anyone know anything about this??

metal monkey make lazer cut dials for the mk2, just need a way to backlight em. I have a set of 8v ones that are now no good to me as i have a 16v. my plan was to get some el sheeting behind em, and use audi speedo/rev counter needles with an led somewhere to light em up.

i bought some "plasma dials" from auto tint design in leeds for my RS Turbo (sorry) about 3 years ago
they were really good looking
BUT thay dont list them for the MK2
guess i'll have to mess on fitting MK3 clocks when i do my VR6 conversion

Hah, I made this exact same post not so long ago.
In short unless you want el dials theres not much u can do in terms of back lit.
It appears a lot of people want it though so maybe in the future I dunno.
Checkout this dials post, might have a bit more info for you.

El is electroluminescent yea?? What is that?? I've been checking out that Metal Monkey site someone mentioned before, and that seems like the sh!t I'll be getting
-
i think so yea, its basically a blue glowing pad that you can use to put behind dials [probably not its actual use originally] then you can obviously put any dials you want and it will shine through it, so if you use the metalmonkey ones which have bits cut out for the numbers etc then it will or should look ok.
Havent seen it done tho in this way, you can buy things from ebay like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK2-120MPH-PLASMA-GLOW-WHITE-DIALS-VW-101_W0QQitemZ290293765125QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item290293765125&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318
but personally i think they look a bit ott and in the day time they dont look as nice as other dials, i loved the ddi ones but they dont make it for mk2's.
The best way that I might do is, wire up some led's behind the dials then get metal monkey dials to go over the top or something.

Yea I was planning on getting the metal monkey sheets, and hooking up an LED circuit behind it

let me know how it goes as I will be attempting this in a few months, It should be pretty easy to hook some up behind it, then just mod it so no light can escape from other areas like around the dials etc.

I'll keep ya posted, but will prob. be a couple months til I do it too haha

This thread has got me thinking. Why couldn't you just make your own out of acetate?
So, I've mocked up the HVAC controls and pulled mine apart. My laser printer is be ghey and printing seriously dirty prints - so I'll need to get it printed elsewhere.
But here's the rough idea, remove the plastic clear insert, replace with an acetate print of below, and put whatever colour card you want behind it, then illuminate as normal.

you could but the mk2 doesnt have backlit dials, thats why were thinking of the best ways to do it basically.
