Title: limp car
Post by: cняis on 24 February 2009, 18:35
i mean limp in the fact that the car sits exactly 1cm lower on the nsf compared to the osf.

had new springs fitted today as one had snapped but this was apparent before that. also new top mounts have not sorted the problem.

any ideas?  :undecided:

camber seems to be fine, but thats just a visual check. our mechanic just marked the camber adjustment bolts whilst removing the old springs.

Could a knackered damper cause this perhaps?

im no expert here, but i would have thought the spring would hold the car up rather than the damper, i.e. duff dampers wouldnt cause a different ride height (just bouncy suspension)

My golf sat a little lower on one side at the rear and caused a bit of tyre rub on 8" rims, it was a rusted out rear top mount which meant the spring was pretty much resting on the bodywork a cm or so higher than it should. New top mounts when I fitted new springs and shocks sorted it.

It would be worth checking that the springs are seated correctly in the rubber mounts at the top of the rear shocks, and in the correct seating place on the upper spring cap and lower spring plate on the front shocks, I guess this could make a cm or so difference if they are not right on one side?

Out of interest, how are you comparing the height - from the arch? What are the odds on your plastic arch trim having dropped a bit on one side?

Changed my front shocks at the weekend, the car was sitting 1cm lower than it should at the front on both sides before i swapped. Could be worth checking.

thanks - i will check all these out. the rear springs havent been changed yet so maybe one is knackered and sitting slightly lower than it should, and therefore effecting the height of the opposite corner.

i.e. NSR spring sitting too low, OSF spring sitting too high?

i havent properly compared the rear ride height on both sides, it looks the same but i've not measured it.
