Title: Noisey Roof on mk1 Cabriolet
Post by: Topless Steve on 08 July 2004, 00:27
Hi,

As I get to about 100mph (with the roof up) I get a lot of very noisey wind resistance from the join above the windscreen, does anyboby else have this problem, and is there a way to cure it?

it's a cab, so you are going to get loads of noise at any high speed, I find turning the radio up helps  ;)

Try that speed with the roof down, it's great  ;D Or so I'm told  ;)

I think you will find that if you went in a top of the range BMW/Merc convertible you would get a similar noise at that speed, it's one of the things you just got to accept if you want a cab.  :)

When i fitted my new roof i made sure the front bit was very snug... this lessened the sound a little....

However you're gonna get this in any convertible...

Like Adam said... Turn the Radio up. My car had loads of rattles and creaks until i turned the stereo up.  :D

you could adjust the clamps on both sides to clamp it down a bit.
but dont over do it as it then wont unclamp as i found out.

A question, you and the rest of us would like to know the answer to!! If you find one, tell me!! I doubt you'll find a quality one for less then ?350, you'll maybe get a Stayfast for about that price.

This is the site i found:

http://www.autohoods.co.uk/ca_Volkswgen_golf_mk1.htm

So, is a stayfast not worth having?

Stayfast is ok, but if I were to put a Mohair on my cab I would go for a good quality one (personal opinion) - remember to add VAT and P&P to those prices though.

i think the mohair looks nicer, more classy :).the easy option if a seagull sh**es on your car is to carry a bottle of water and a sponge in the boot ;D

had a price for the stayfast mohair hood.?250 all in.i looked at the twillfast hood also but couldn't see any differance in the quality.i was advised that the durability and the look of both hoods were exactly the same.i had this price from j.r.smith interiors and hoods in swansea.(01792 461022).most of the local dealers,vw,bmw, peugeot, renault and ford use this guy.

dinx from my experience of cabrios pvc ones split and shrink faster and mohair one last longer but are harder to clean. also the pvc ones i find fade after a while.
samba has pvc, golf has mohair

Dinx, if you're going to get a new hood deffo get a mohair one, yes they are harder to clean but I think they look better and they are hardwearing, although I reckon I'll have to replace mine in the next 12 - 18 months, even so I think it's still the original so it's lasted 13 years  :)

P.S. Getting bird shat off it can be a b1tch if you leave it there for long enough.  :(

I've just brought a Mohair hood from autohoods and installed it myself today. Its top quality for the price. It's worth replacing all the cables as well while putting the new hood on.

The main area of concern I had doing this myself was cutting the hole out for the back window...worked out alright though.  Check out my gallery shortly and your see pictures of my car with new hood. Worth every penny spent - ?280 - http://www.autohoods.co.uk

the thick "quilt" part of the roof is for thermal insulation as far as i can tell.
had a thought today to remove wind noise from the leading edge of the roof perhaps a wind deflector could be put there similar to the one wich some sliding roofs had on them. if it was assembled so the leading edge was under the windscreen rubber then wind noise could be eliminated from the front.

That is the same place I was looking at to swap my hood, does it come with a new frame and everything?

No I just brought cloth outside and inside with new cables and installed onto my frame on the car. Autohood do install the new hoods as well for an extra ?100 +VAT. I only did it myself as I've done them before and I hate paying extra for work I can do myself. :)
