Title: Steering column gaiter?
Post by: Len on 24 February 2009, 13:18
Well I am assuming thats what I was looking at!

When doing the heatshield job at weekend I was able to see a huge rubber gaiter that had a big hole in it!
I'm guessing its the end of column joint elbow down to the steering rack.

My question is would this be an MOT failure?

yep it would fail on that, seal the hole with duck tape and wrap it in some heat stuff and they wont be able to see :)
alternatively you can swap it with engine in place but its a bit of a faf.

Thanks John!

Yea thought it would be a fail. MOT's not until June so got plenty time.
Will do the duck tape/heat stuff when I change the heatshield for a new one!

They wont be able to see it with the proper heatshield in place!

Tried using duck tape!  It wouldnt stick!

Cleaned up the gaitor as best I could but still no luck getting stuff to stick to it!

So looks like I shall have to get a new one and have it fitted!
