Hi Steve, welcome to the site, our resident VR6 expert will be sure to help with many of your question, however I am sure he will be the first to tell you that one of the first mods you will need to do is to uprate the suspension, to lose the "barge-like" handling that is its only real downfall.

It really depends on how old a car you are prepered to go for, and what sort of driving you want to do. You could pick up a 10 year old VR6 for that which will give you plenty of power and speed, but is not the most nimble of cars, or you could shop around for a good modified mk2 with a VR6 engine transplant, or a G60 for less, that should provide loads of fun and speed and handle a lot better, or even a mint mk1 with a bit of change left over, that on the right roads, will give you a huge grin factor.

Welcome to the forum mate.
Eddy from the uk-mkivs forum has his modified mk4 1.8T up on ebay at the moment, bidding is at ?3700 right now but he's said the reserve is ?5000.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2483953813 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2483953813)

although not mint, or low mileage, you did ask which was the quickest  ;)

hi steve,   welcome to the site

im extremely mark 1 biased.  if u want a real, basic, fun, fast car u cant go wrong with a modded mark 1.

but its gonna depend what ur using it for,  i wouldnt want to commute in one everyday  :-X

the vr6 is amazing if its been shrunk a bit, had a few goes in one now and definately gave me something to dream about.  still shame about the looks tho  :P

alreet lambo welcome to the site man!!!

with 5k in your pocket your a lucky man indeed,
there is a world of oppurtunity out there in dubland with that kind of money.

recently ive bin lookin at mk3 vr6's for the hell of it,
you can get a real nice highline for about 5k,
with the highline you get air con and leather(top of the range model)

definately if you got 5k be looking at these.
you MUST get that roly poly chassis sorted if your getting a mk3 vr6 tho,
cos they handle like sh!t when standerd( well compared to my mk2 they do ;))

for 5k your are not gonna get a decent quick mk4, i definately wouldnt look at a smokey old turbo for that kind of money mate :-\.

when it comes down to mk2's for 5k you can really get the cream of the crop.
look at g60's and rallyes for that kind of money
mk2 1.8t converted cars do for about 5k but they are very rare as most people do that conversion and then keep the car for life! :D.

as for mk1s and 5k.......... naw i wouldnt :-\, but then im biased i guess.

check these dudes out:

www.supergolfs.co.uk

they got some real special stuff in at the moment 8)

5k, you lucky basted! :D
happy hunting matey! ;)

standerd the vr6 pisses on it

0-60 in abotu 7.2 for a vr6
8.5 for a 1.8t@ 150bhp
7.9 for a 1.8t @ 180bhp

i like dubbys idea, then we could look at doing the resteraunt rite? :D

Hiya lambo, welcome to the site. If you are looking for a fast golf then it looks like marcus (m777cusgti) has spoken a lot of sense (for a change ! ;)) If I had 5k I reckon I would go for that red rallye that is on sale on the www.supergolfs.co.uk website, it's something different but it's Left hand drive and don't forget if you go for a G60 or a rallye you will have to get the charger overhauled every so many miles, sorry I can't remember what the interval is but I'm sure GavG60 or jv can confirm this.  :) Happy hunting.

Paul (seeing as everyone is using first names on this post  ;D)

You should be able to find the stats and figures with google, but you will really  need to get out and test drive a couple of cars to get the real feel. I would reccomend testing a rallye, VR6, and a GOOD mk1 tintop.

to spend 5k on a mk1?

no thanks :D

it would be nearly insane to spend 5k on a mk216v for 5k let alone a mk1 :D

but your rite, have a good drive of a rallye, g60 and a vr6, take your pick from either of them and you will have a fookin top car mate ;)
