Post by: trousers on 23 February 2009, 11:58
Howdy

i am goin to pick up my mk2 gti 16v on sat and was just wondering when to service her, i have come from an s3 which was just once a year, but was wondering whether it needed to be serviced twice a year because of its age, i do about 10k miles a year pretty much all motorway and fast roads

I would service it as soon as you get it home, always better to do and you will spot anything dodgy en- route.  Personally, I never do "a" service.  Will do the oil when it looks grubby, clean the filter when its dirty... so and so forth. Ben.

hi matey i run a mk2 91 8valve its got nearly 160k on the clock so i do a full service every 5k just to be on the safe side and change the gearbox oil every 10k...overkill i know but at 18 yrs old it makes it much smoother to drive...

Changing oil too frequently can sometimes do more harm than good, AFAIK there's a break in period for oil to get it running at its best.

Basically, when its pure black - change it, if its not, then motor on. When the oil breaks down it turns black - and that's when it ceases to do its job as well as it used to.

I do mine every 7k ish

ain't that the truth! Basically, when the tappets start making noise, keep throwing money and time at it until they've stopped - then basically you've completed 5 years worth of services in one, not that I'm bitter or anything ...

From what I know, it's something like this;

Every 12 months

-Check anti-freeze mix
-Renew engine oil and filter (recommend twice a year)
-Check exhaust system
-Check idle speed and mixture
-Check clutch operation
-Check automatic transmission fluid level
-Check CV joints and boots
-Check fuel and brake lines, hoses and unions
-Check brake pads and rear shoe linings
-Check headlight beam alignment
-Check steering gear
-Check suspension
-Lubricate hinges and catches
-Check vehicle underbody

Every 2 years

-Renew brake fluid

Every 10,000 miles (15,000 km) if covering more than 10,000 miles per year

-Renew engine oil and filter
-Check brake pad linings

Every 20,000 miles (30,000 km)

-Check alternator, power steering pump and air conditioner compressor drivebelt(s) adjustment and condition
-Renew spark plugs
-Renew air cleaner element
-Renew fuel filter
-Clean and lubricate sunroof guide rails
-Renew automatic transmissioon and final drive fluid

Every 40,000 miles (60,000 km)

-Renew timing blet

They are old cars worth next to nothing. It's far simpler to drive it until something makes a noise, gets annoying or breaks completely, then fix it. Oh, check the obvious fluids etc, and change the oil when you can.

I would like to say that at no point did I copy this information from anywhere...

When it comes to parts, I agree with the above, just wait till it drops off/blows up/stops working. Only do work if you have to, the more you tinker and mess with things the more it goes wrong.
