Title: Advice needed on price I should be paying for MKV GTI
Post by: electric_cooper on 23 February 2009, 11:08
I am currently in the market for the following

MKV Golf GTI 3 door Manual
Candy White
Preferably with leather, armrest and 18" monza

Looking at 2006ish with low miles

Just wondering what sort of price I should be looking at as I have not got a clue what the market for GTI's were like

I was originally looking into a Corsa VXR and dealers are selling them below book value!!!!!!!!!!! so when I spoke to a VW dealer yesterday who had a white one, I noticed the were charging nearly £3000 over book prices

Theres was a standard MKV Golf GTI Manual 3 door in white, no extras at all. It was a 55 reg with 40k miles and he has offered it to me for £12k. He said the market is strong and the candy white commands a premium (I didnt think either of those comments were true)

Is that a decent price or is he trying to rip me off?

Any help would be much appreciated

From a dealer that doesn't sound too bad... I'm sure you can haggle a bit off that.  You might be able to pick something up closer to 10k private though.

A month or so ago I put my car details into webuyanycar.com (see Nonsense section..) and I got an email from them a couple of days ago to say...

Thank you for using webuyanycar.com recently to value your car, registration SY05 xxx.  We constantly review our prices to ensure that customers receive the best possible valuation for their car in line with market prices.

Because of the recent economic downturn, new car sales have fallen to the lowest level in years as customers turn to used car dealers for a better deal. There is now a shortage in the supply of used cars in the UK which has pushed up the price of many used cars and enables us to offer you an increased valuation.

Your car has been revalued using the details you supplied and we're delighted to issue you with an increased valuation of £8,835* assuming the condition of your car is unchanged and still available for sale.

Needless to say their improved offer is still shyte but there may be some truth in the used values bit...

Candy white is quite rare & does look  but i would say it wasn't worth paying any more for. When new it was a no cost option so why pay extra now ?.

ive been told the same by mate who is 2nd hand dealer. he goes to auction and said he used to buy 5 at a time and now rarely comes back with more than 2!!
no bugger is buying new cars so lots of people are buying good used which does two things... less used cars = higher prices and more people buying= higher prices!
also i think hire companies and company reps are not renewing theirs for new models that much this year so no excess stock floating as yet!
so for me where i thought there might be a few that drop into the 10k mark with my spec just aint happening.

I love dealers....if you took that 55 reg with 40k miles in to him he would offer you £8000 if your lucky.

It saddens me to say it but £12k is high for the car...do more research...if you want a Tornado red 55 (MY06) with absolutely everything on it including milltek 33,000miles for less PM me I could be tempted to part with her...that said, with my new pescaras on I am falling in love all over again!

pics soon (honest)

Was offered something like £11,805 for my 2008 08 Edition 30 with 7000 miles on the clock, this was when it was 5 months old, made me lol.

Edit: just had an email with an updated valuation of £13,640...still unacceptable for a 2008 08 Edition 30 with under 10k on the clock.

Having just sold  privately, I would suggest prices are driven by spec and history and condition. So many cars out there, although white does narrow the choice. But if private, for a 2006,  I'd suggest 11ish, for that it should be less than 25K miles and VAG warranted.

My 07gti with 5000miles was in for a service the other day and I just asked what he would give me against a new Sirocco and salesman goes away and comes back and offers me £11500, I just said your taking the piss and there is no point in wasting my time or his time with that kind of offer. He goes away and has a chat with his sales manager after what i said  I wanted for my car and then offered me £14,000 against a £23,000 scirocco. I said no, as to be honest at this moment in time there is no other car I would rather be in than my current GTI.

The deals are certainly out there if you have the cash in the bank & can move quick.

The car has FVWH & is A1 condition (pic's on members rides....'wifes new toy').

I had already considered 2 others at 14k which both looked great cars.

Well, I just sold a pretty mint 54 plate in Aberdeen (grey, plenty extras including Monzas), FVWSH, 45k, got a shade under 9.5k for it. Not a great price, but there seemed to be plenty 05s on Autotrader/Pistonheads for under 9k so had to be competitive. Didn't get much interest when it was over 10k and had to get it shifted as had bought another car.

Kind of wish I'd held off another couple of weeks though as the forum seems to be full of folk looking for cars now!

Best to avoid dealers, I'd try auction, should be able to pick up one up there for a good price. Try signing up for www.auctionview.co.uk so that you can find suitable cars. Just cut out the middleman!

Wow, where did you get it at that price? All the ones I see are £16k and above!
Care to PM/post details of the others you had seen? ;)
