Its been sugjested to me that the mk2 and early mk3 heater matrix's are the same, is this true as i have a brand new mk2 matrix and my missus's mk3 desperatly needs one! switched the heaters on and got a face full of scalding water

mk3 matrix's superseeded the mk2 ones around 1989, they went to another number before becoming a 1H2 mk3 prefix number
you need a 1h2 819 031a/b.. iirc thats the number, its gotta start wiht a 1h2 eitherway

where did you buy the matrix from, njot all places only stock the MK2 matrix. GSF sell a cheap and expensive matrix, the spensive one is same as what they sell for a MK3, so one would assume the cheaper one may be the under-specced version? The mk3 section only has the more spensive matrix.

expect youll find oces chinese and ones made elsewhere.. we ahve a choice of a £30 really farkin good one we get in from germany which i have, and then we ahve listings for a febi one to which is way more.. maybe gsf list a cheap and a valeo aftermarket?

lol i just got one from veedubmachine, he lists his non genuine matrix at £15 brand new! and the company that makes it has the same part number for mk3 and mk2! Bargain! Cars up for sale soon anyway so it'll do for a couple of years!

Possibly, but I'd expect if that was the case the cheaper one would also be in the MK3 section?
