Title: Inlet gasket confusion
Post by: rubberdubber on 22 February 2009, 17:39
Been stripping down my old head today to put the manifolds and fuel rail onto the new head but am having abit of confusion with my head set.

To start with, the inlet manifold gasket that came off is the one in the top of this picture, my head set contained the 2 below, 1 is thin metal, the other is a composite material.  Which one do i use? or do i use both? its not quite the same shape either but will fit if i loosen the fuel rail.

The head set also came with a bag of smaller seals, 4 black rubber rings which i assume are the injector seals but they seam abit big and 5 copper washers which i have no idea what they do!
New injector seal in the middle, old one on the left, copper washer on the right!

The head set is made by a company called BGA and the part number corresmonds to PB engine code.  Any ideas what the copper washers do? and whether those injector and inlet manifold gaskets will be ok?

many thanks in advance!

I am 99% sure that inlet gasket is for a carb engine.

just looked on gsf's online shop and they list the same head gasket set for carb and injection, i cant figure out why there is 2 of the incorrect shape aswell!

I used the bga headset when I did my pb last year, wasn't sure about the inlet manifold gasket or headgasket so I bought them from vw, inlet gasket was the same as the bga one so I went with it and its been fine so far. Didn't do the injector seals so can't help you there.

copper washer looks like it would go on a fuel fitting but can't be sure??

copper washers are probably for oil/temp sensors.
top gasket is fuel injection only gasket, bottom 2 fit both carby & injection engines.  The extra hoop is for the coolant channel part of the inlet on a carby, still fits fine on an injection one.  The yanks think the hoop is a 'handle' to make the gasket easier to fit

you should fit either the the fibre one or the metal one, not both.  If it was me I'd go with the fibre one simply because I know they work perfectly!

fat rubber seal is for k-jet injectors, thin one could be for digi injectors, or perhaps the bottom seal on the air shrouded k-jet injectors, though they look a bit big for that.  How many of each do you have?

The old ones were the thinner looking ones, new ones are the fat ones ;)

cheers for the help, much appreciated! yeh the smaller looking o ring are the old ones that where on the injectors, i have a packet of 4 of those bigger ones, but there alot bigger, i can squeeze them onto the injector but they wont push in the head!  May pop down gsf and buy 4 new injector seals to save the worry.  Cheers for the inlet gasket info lol at the Americans! Its odd how the kit contained 2 of the same gasket, ile go with your advice and use the fibre one, that metal one is really thin aswell so wouldnt do much good i dont think!

cheers
