... why don't you just buy a new car?
I swear, everyone I know, whenever we talk about cars, always ask me - why don't you just get a new one? Its driving me mad (pun not completely intended ).
I don't think people understand that even if I had a new car - I'd still take it apart every week
-
I get the same.."why have three old broken ones rather than one new one" I would open the bonnet and start ripping all the plastic out!
-
This never happens to me! but mainly because our family currently owns, 2 Land rovers, 2 Morgans, 4 Minis, 3 Renault 4s, MG Midget, Split Screen Camper, 32 V8 Ford, oh and 7 or 8 motorbikes from 1965 to 2001
so we are kinda car nuts :)
Our garden does look like a car park tho
-
every day  espeically when it goes into the " works " garage for tinkering most lunchtimes
-
Most days when I had mine.
-
yep its sad but true happens all the time to me to
normally girls who think my car is "old" so it must be crap or my mates who drive around in financed french rubbish.
im seein a girl who loves my car think i better hold on to her
-
Never ! Most of my family couldnt care less about cars but my father keeps saying "why dont you get a G60 or a ralleye"
-
ALL the time! lol I've actually lost count...happens most when there is a little problem with it....
-
my mrs says why do i want a GTi when it breaks all the time ??
i just say she doesn't understand

Hmmm... I ask myself this question mosts weekends when im laying underneath one of them!
But the same, new cars bore me to death, im a mechanic at a Peugeot garage and there so so boring! Oh and new cars look crap.
-
I've bought new cars, and still have 2 newish cars, but no other car puts a smile on my face like my Mk2.
Just looking at it does it for me.
-
 here here im with rubberdubber
HATE NEW CARS........... BORING
-
My missus hates my mk2 she want's a new car.
Until she learns to drive she's banned from hurtfull words against her or SHE's WALKING.
-
LOL  So its not just me then! Does my head in - its not like new cars are free from problems! Infact, my dad - who always moans about my car has a Merc jeep just outside of warranty and since then its needed a new xenon bulb (£160), every injector replaced (£600), around 4 million replacements on disks and pads ($4.5bn Ugandan dollars). His car does 25 mpg, mine does 44 mpg and is faster
When my car isn't broke (5 or 6 days a year), I love it! You see tonnes of mini's, clios, corsa's etc - I've seen 2 MK2 golfs in the past 3 months.
My car gives me cool points
(Saying the above cost me cool points :embarassed:)
-
no one says it to me but i often think it for a little bit but then i come round because deep down i never want to get rid of this car
-
Everyone I know 'understands'
-
Yesterday, I spent at least 8 hours on my Mk2 trying to sort the blowing exhuast. Much swearing and getting very irritated "why did I buy this F****** stupid car", but then in the afternoon when it was all sorted and sounding sweet!!! I went for a drive with a friend in his FRP down some beautifull roads over watership down (near newbury) and I remembered exactly why I bought my Mk2 and why I spend so much time fixing it (when it does not always realy need fixing ).
When I later explained this resoning with the missus when she asked "why I bothered?" she just couldnt understand. When I have similar conversations with other people they are the same, and cannot grasp why I would spend so much time working on a 20 year old Golf for the sole purpose of driving it, when I have a 4 year old Golf sat on the drive which is surely much better?
-
My old boy rather irritatingly pointed out that i'd be financially better off if i actually HIRED a sports car on a yearly basis rather than spending money on old buckets like i do but... wheres the fun in that?
-
thing is mk2'sppl told me to buy a newer car, i did i killed it that hapend every time i listend so i don't anymore
to date there have only been 23 occasions where my mk2 hasent got me home and two of them happend within walking distance of home 10K miles of been used as toy has killed every car i've tryed other than mk2 golfs, and when the old man used to have to have pug 406's as company car the mk2 was more relable than them some days it would complain, and it'd smoke and rattel when cold or to hot but it'd done 170k but inortantly it allways went unlike the 406
-
My family gave up and shut up a long time ago.
They even came to a track day last year.
It's just a matter of conditioning. The older you are, the more people around you become accustomed to your ways
-
i sold my mk3 to buy a mk1 cab which i did  wife thought i was crackers couldnt understand why i would sell a perfectly good modern much cherished car that even she liked driving to replace it with an old ugly box shaped 80s car that didnt even have power steering (her words not mine). i loved that car fixed all the little niggles on it cleaned it up inside and out. i got so much pleasure from driving it more than my mk3 could ever give me. me and the kids loved it the wife hated it refused to drive it ,steering to heavy ,its ugly, embarrasing, she would even move it off the drive if it was parked behind her car rather than use it even though she would only be nipping out. after an 8 month love affair we parted company (the car not the wife)after someone at work offerd me good money for it and with the wife refusing to drive it it was time to let it go  my next car was to be a mk2 gti (with power bloody steering) but after waiting for one to come along i ended up with a 306 diesel that was 14 months ago and here i am trawling through the for sale sections again is it dajavou. i think its an illness you sell a perfectly good reliable modern car .....well you all know the rest ............IM AFFECTED
-
i think many of the new cars lack SOUL!!!! i love my mk2's wouldnt want any other car.
people assume ur crazy to be spending money on cars that are 18+ years old. but i LOVE IT!!!!!
-
despite mine being currently off the road (this time CONDEMNED as the front coil spring snapped, i love roundabouts), and the mrs using that as an excuse to moan about getting a newer and more comfortable car, it wont be sold for some time yet
love it, although its a bit too noisy for long journeys.
was considering buying the boss's 99 TT quattro for cheap but OH the shame! :embarassed:

TT, slammed, dished wheels = Awesome

I get the piss taken out off everyday at work
Think people at home are beginning to appreciate at last!
-
Im 32 now, and I've always had a company car since starting work, about 10 in all ranging from sh!te Vectra's to OK Honda Accord 2.2 diesel ex with all the toys to good Mk5 Gt TDi 140. Then I started my own business so I could choose anything. I chose a 91 J reg Mk2 Valver, Beacuse It's so much fun.
Also, Since owning it I've seen only 3 other Mk2, and 2 Mk1 Cabbys. All the drivers have looked and given a knowing nod and a thumbs up as we pass each other. What do we know that others do not, eh
And as a recent example I pulled into Halfrauds car park in Neath and a chap in his mid 20's walked past and he couldn't stop himself from looking over his sholder as he went by and nodding. Similar thing happened in Tesco's petrol station. Group of teenagers in the back of a Corsa were drooling as they gawped at my valver.
I agree with everything said above. All new cars look the same, the feel the same, but the Golf is different.
Plus it's a lot easier to pick out in a car park

still a hairdressers car though, and in silver (the most boring colour) :undecided:

I get it lots..... Mind you, I dont use te G60 all that often, but when I do, I get ''pepper'' from my friends.... Actually, my girlfriend loves the G60, and she prefers it to my daily driver, the X5 4,8is, but I think this is because its smaller and easier to park...

I get this a LOT! I had an '03 Lotus Elise before my mk2 Gti and I still took that apart and did all my own servicing... You either get it or you don't. I'm lucky though: my GF doesn't get it, but she still lets me play 'cos she knows I'm (almost) never happier than when I'm in the garage
-
when people say its a waste of money, old and mostly broken, did 16 mile last year..
i say la la la la im not listening la la la la la.
-
People don't bother to ask me anymore.
I might get a sensible car, but I will get bored with driving it.
.........Waiting on Lottery for my 911 RS.

im 19 and had a 1960 ford anglia for my second car , i got told to buy a new car every single day by my mrs , and family , but some people dont understand all new cars look exactly the same . and are ugly as hell , old cars have character , and its actually quite fun having a car to fix up , and if i bought a new car and it was extremely reliable ,i would be bored of it within seconds . but now i own my mk3 golf , it isnt new or really old , and it works out a perfect medium and i think they look great .
-
think the one old car i wish id listed to people about was a morris ital. nasty cars nasty enignes. it clatterd to a hault with only 15,000 miles on the clock about 500 of them done by me. anyways built a new engine for the thing useing some spectial bits. all excited then i drove it not a happy bunny. spoke to some peopel that knew those cars and some old blocke tipped up in a morris minor and had a look and had a drive and loved it. following conversation was funny.
me > so what do you thinks wrong with it i just cant get it to go
blokey > what are you one about it the quickest one i've driven
me > Oh B0LLOX is that all you can make them do.
2 weeks later i sold the engine to him, hes still driveing around with now and he gets in my way daily.
one old car i wish i never owned and it still f**king taunts me
-
Lol!
-
Lol.
I love my old mk2 as I always have done, my mates even baked me a birthday cake in the shape of my old 8v!!
Was going down the by pass in town and passed a brand new S4 convertible with the top down (weathers not been too bad up here) lassies in the back were rubber necking to see what was cruising past smiling and wavin...
Also I love the fact that it stands out in a carpark full of jelly moulds, there's only one other oak green in my city but his is pretty different style to mine so no chance of confusion.
I also love the road to work when I hit the passing place and slaughter everything in my path, makes 7am starts bearable
-
thought I'd just rehash this old thread
I'm getting this kind of small minded cr@p at the moment from college people (i dont call em friends) and the local lads around my way, I'm 20 had my car since last year, had a 1995 fiat cinquecento sporting before it. I get "that golfs really old, citeron are doin a deal blah blah blah". I get fairly angry as they cant dont understand....My argument is the fiat 1100cc cost my £1159 to insure, my 1.8 golf driver with twin choke weber on costs my £698 insurance  and its totally individual not like your frence fries
I love to kicking their scrawny french butts down the by-pass.....resulting in "erm well Ian your cars fast" luckily I have 6 mates whom drive old dubs that understand and nod knowingly
peer pressure is a strong thing..but feck I love my motor

Ignorance is bliss.
You're just ahead of the curve.
-
I get this as well. A few years ago my Mk2 golf misbehaved ( I just can't say "broke down") with the wife driving. The small clip came off the throttle cable at the throttle body end. Hardly a catastrophe.
Some commented "why don't you get a new car".
They just don't understand.
And as for going for the scrappage scheme. Don't get me started.
-
I've always drummed it into my gf that im going to get a mk2 some day. She hates them with a passion, red ones the most (she hates red cars for some reason) :|
Luckily for her i bought a white one (2 weeks ago) most of my 'non car' mates appreciate it, my mates that bum jap crap have asked me 'why?!' and my dub car mates love it. Old cars have character, this mk2 has bags of it, people that havnt experienced cant and wont understand if they dont want to.
I was showing my gf some of the history one sunday morning though and when she saw that the mk2 was 13K back in 1992, she perked up abit and there seemed to be abit of realisation about what the car was haha
End of the day 'You are not what you own', it'l just take the materialistic a-holes awhile to realise this, if they ever do.
-
Someone once suggested to me that should get shot of my car, for something newer! Or at least upgrade to a mk3

I explain to every muppet that asks me this how they've lost more £ than me in ineterest and depreciation!! I've prob spent 4/5k over the years so far on my mk2, and its an abf'd uber rare colour jobbie. Sure I may lose a couple on it straight away if I sold it, but people lose that in months/ 1 year of depreciation!! My car is rare, unique in fact, the number plate says 'hung', everyone young and old loves it, it smashes most 20k new cars to bits (every morning + evening in fact), basically there's just no argument. That's not even taking into account how a mk2 drives compared to new 'de-sensitised' cars!! I'd happily lose a couple/few grand over 7 years so far on a car that kicks every1 elses arse. You pay 15k for your pile of wank that by the time you've finished paying 18k for it is only worth 3!!! Ha! When I 'just' and I mean just get done by a new st focus etc, and get smiled/laughed at, I explain that actually, for a 21 year old car with no turbo, 2k's worth instead of 20 that actually they're the ones that should be embarrased!!!
-
Every time im doing something to my car my neibours say 'what's wrong with it now' pisses me off! And was talking to one of the girls my misses goes to uni with and was trying to explain what I'm gunna do to my Jetta (she's asked) and after trying to explain for ages all I got back was 'so your gunna be driving round ina £450 car....' I just gave up at that point.

I like that thanks
been out for a nice drive with my dub mates this evening around the coast roads, pulled up to get chips and the usual french, jap crappers hanging around, we (the dubbers) were all smiling and genral chit chat about the cars, all they said was 'so dude what size rims can you fit on it' geeez give me strength
-
I don't get those comments to be honest but what annoys me is people who don't respect it. I get loads of people pulling out in front of it, trying to beat me off the line at lights etc. They obviously think it's old, therefore it's crap. I get far more respect on the road in the Mk6.
Little do they know though!!!

New does not = Better.
Look on it as your responsibility to educate the Plebs.
-
It could be like trying to educate an Evangelist to worship the Devil though - an almost impossible task!!!!

Every single time I phone my mum she asks how the car is and why don't I just sell it
