I have a 1990 mk2 16v golf with a cable change gearbox that is now seizedĀ  So i have bought a replacement off ebay
After getting it home i realised that this is a rod change box and not a cable change box like the one on my golf, are they interchangeable or have i just waisted a load of money?

Ok ive checked the numbers on both gearboxes the one on my 16v is 02y and the one i have bought is 02a (is this an 8 valve box?) any help would be great

your old box is a rod change box, with cable clutch. the one you have bought is a cable change box with hydro clutch ;)
02a was fitted to MK3 16v, Golf G60, Corrado & Passat, wont work on your car without swapping gearstick, fit hydro clutch or SEAT ABF cable conversion bracket.

Thanks, the guy i bought it off swears it came out of his H reg mk2 16v which i can only think had a mk3 engine in it,ive found another one on ebay that is the o2y box so im gonna bid on that and if i dont win that ive been told a mk3 gti 8v box will fit but im worried that will kill the performance of my 16v as i have a mk3 8v aswel and its bloody gutless!

MK2 8v box is a closer match in terms of ratios, but you'll need a MK2 GTI 8v friction disc for it to go on. Not that its a bad thing as a new clutch is recommended anyway, unless you already bought a 16v clutch kit

I won the bid on ebay for the o2y box which is the one thats meant to be in it so thats sorted that! cant wait to have my mk2 back! its so much more xciting to drive than my mk3 :smug:
