Title: £1000 to spend but wot on?
Post by: steve85 on 21 February 2009, 17:54
just bought a mk4 2.0l 8v gti on a xreg with 40,000 on the clock and got about a £1000 to spend on mods. installed a decent sony head unit for £150 the other week then put in a k+n pannel filter for another £50 leavin me £800. the next step is hopefully to find a gti spoiler from somwhere and then do a few performance mods. not sure on wot to do tho. was looking into a cat back system from milltek but you have to fanny around changing the rear valance for a 4motion style rear valance and thought the extra money and effort to do this wasnt really worth it. somone suggested getting a sport cat for it but not sure they do one for a mk4 2.0 8v and if they do wot sort of powergain i would get just from a sport cat? any suggestions very welcome as im a little stuck on wot to do?

5 bhp maybe - the thing is is really hard to get any good gains from a 2.0 8v.

You can get a remap to increase throttle response - speak to R-tech and im sure he can sort something for you.

To be honest I don't think there is much point trying to make the engine more powerful (as it's the 2L). You could lower it and install ARBs so it handles in the corners better. Then spend the rest on making it look better.

My 2p

You'd spent hundreds upon hundreds, and said only get a few bhp, which you won't even notice to be honest mate.  As mentioned, I'd spend your money on looks instead of power  :undecided:

wots ARBs?? is it really not worth a sport cat or a full cat back system then if i just want a bit more response from it wen i put my foot down?? looked at getting a bigger downpipe to a sport cat to give it more grunt but thought the sport cat on its own mite do the trick as im tryin to save some money up?

you guys obveously now wot your talking about more than me. everytime i come on here looking for the answer to somthing you can tell me in minutes. if i do buy a sport cat for the extra few bhp will i get a different noice from the car as the standard 2.0 exhaust sounds a bit gash?

Yeah you will get a better note from it - look at getting a blueflame or custom system - you will notice it but its a lot of money for a tiny gain TBH.

Depends how much you want to spend and how far you want to go with it.

As said i would put the money into getting it looking good.

Hard to find the 2.0 8v listed on most wed sites. Your best bet is to email known company's to get the best price

Throw a set of those cams in from Awesome & then see R-Tech about a map. ;)

Or I would spend the money on suspension & brakes & get the car quicker from point to point. :afro:

i have the 2.0 8v golf and its a 53 plate with 48k on the clock and its genuine cos the wife bought it new a few years a go now .. she bought a new golf and i took the old one .. i have a very powerful bmw too  .. 155mph limited  but i love driving the wee golf , thats why i kept it .. so dont sell it, dont put a turbo engine or 130 or 180 and so on .. you will get many years driving out of it .. many golfs on hear are round the clock and are jealous that yours has only got 40 ish.. the rear gti spoiler is only £88 plus vat from a dealer and fits perfect  as i got one the other week ...
