Hi all,
I know thsi sounds silly but how can i tell if my key has an immobiliser chip in it? i looked inside and it seems to just have the light battery, button etc
MY care is P reg Mk3 Gti 8v,
any ideas?

The key has the button but its for a small light, the battery insid eis obviously to light it up. Dont know about standard ones, buy ive got a remote fob, then ive got an immobiliser key seperate, then ive got the car's original key.
-
If it is 95 or younger they generally had immobilzer keys.
The flat round ones don't for sure.
-
there should just be a little black square chip.. about the size of errmm about three or four match heads.. usually in a mould to the side of the key..

Yeah. If I was on my laptop I'd give you a pic. Try pryng the key apart to see if there is one in there.

On a 97 it's definately an chiped key
-
its 96, cant see anything in the key!!
-
does it have an airbag or oval side repeaters?
-
My 1996 had a chipped key.

October 1994 GTI receives Long beach alloy wheels and abs as standard fit & All models get driver airbag & engine immobiliser.
(there ws an R plate golf on here without the updated bits!!)
-
it will definatly have one, otherwise the car wouldnt start! your probably looking at it but dont realise it as its not a chip as such, its a very small black rectangle in the upper left. but answering your question yes it will have one.
-
OK thanks guys i found it in the upper right of the key, my next question is if i get a key cut is there anyway (cheap) of cloning the chip?
-
I have no experience with this, but I've heard elsewhere that some standard keycutters may be able to chip keys. Ask around, otherwise it's off the wonderfully expensive glass VW building for inflated prices :)
-
most key cutting shops can code and cut a key...I paid £25 for mine
-
Can I cut in on this thread?
Mine, R Reg 98, came with the keys below. One non-light VW key; one immobiliser/alarm fob; and an override key in the event of the battery going flat.
The immobiliser is a GT immobiliser/alarm. I take it this isn't a VW item?
How would I go about gettting light key as my main key. Only VW?

So it's not just a one off. Does anyone know if this is a VW immobiliser/alarm system?
