Title: Ed30 power loss
Post by: niv_e30 on 20 February 2009, 08:32
Driving home 17th Feb, all was well for half the journey, then, when i pulled away from a junction, there was a distinct lack of power , which continued for next 20 miles or so. guess the turbo waste gate was stuck open or ther ECU had a glitch to open it or whatever.   Had to go out later that evening, (about 3 hours after), and the power was back!!!  It's been OK since, but in back at VW today for them to look at, but I expect I'll get the usual "no fault found" from their diagnostic plug_in, rather than a proper investigation of the cause.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?
Hoping it's just a one off, maybe a stray cosmic ray hit the ECU and moved a critical electron to the wrong place?!!

Regards, Niv

It could have been something known as 'limp mode' where the ECU receives a bad signal and for the sake of the safety of the engine it just lets all the boost p!ss out of the wastegate until you get home. The old TDIs used to suffer a lot from this, especially when they were suddenly hammered (such as pulling away from a junction quickly). A scan of the fault codes will reveal what actually put the car in to limp mode, and if anything needs to be done about it.. although since you say it hasn't occurred again it probably was just a one-off incident, possibly an overboosting signal sent by the MAP sensor as the idle engine suddenly launched.

Let us know how you get on with VW :afro:

Had it mine once after the new engine was fitted, mentioned there was a slight crack in a release valve or something...all fixed under warrenty :)

Got to VW garage at 17:00, told car still in bits, waiting for new valve & sensor for the turbo.
Should be ready by Tuesday PM.
Good job I've got a motorbike as no courtesy car forthcoming!

Anyway, nice weather next week (hopefully), so a blast on the bike is overdue,
somewhat quicker than the e30 as well (not to mention a lot of other stuff,
like M3/M5's etc)!

Give the car £500 worth of Remap, and that may be a better contest lol

M/bike is in Lambo/ferrari territory for acceleration, so I don't think any remapping is going to get my e30 up to that sort of performance!  We're talking sub 4 secs to 60, and my bike is slow compared to 'blades, R1's etc. (R1;  0 to 100 to 0, less than 10 secs, I want one, if my eyeballs will stay in place with that!).

Or I could go out on my shiny new carbon racer, 0 to 60 forever (except over beachy head), but I've got it up to 50 down some big hills, although only about 10 going up!

My stable;  Marin MTB, Holdworth Pro (winter hack), Quest Wave (campag-record etc), Suzuki SV650S, and Ed30, met grey.

Anyone for R20, looks promising, not that heavy V6, but still all 4wd weight, have to wait & see figures I guess.

Warranty 'til 2011, they just don't have any courtesy cars left, useless.
