OK...This is now driving me MAD!
I have a Mk2 GTI which is giving off a grinding / banging / rattle which seems to be coming from the front nearside drive shaft!
It only happens when moving and is more distinct when changing speed, ie after a gear change.
It only happens when in motion, in forward or reverse, straight line or corner. Even more pronounced on poor road surfaces.
It does not increase on corners, but is very noticable when reversing off drive!
I have changed inner and outer CV joints...NO BETTER!
When doing the wheel bearing check (top to bottom motion when jacked up) there is a movement of about 5mm (Both sides), should there be any?
The drive shaft can be moved very slightly too (Even after new CV's)
I can not get to the bottom of this!
I NEED HELP!
Also there is a slight wheel wobble at about 90mph.
Suggestions / Cures are welcome!
Thanks

When rocking the front wheels there should be no noticeable free play.
Sounds like you may need to do the bearings.
Try doing the same test but with a mate pushing the brake pedal, if there is no play then its definate wheel bearing, if there is still play then look at the lower suspension balljoint.
