Title: oh no him again!
Post by: matsu on 19 February 2009, 17:24
yep me!!

77k miles on 2005 55 but fully loaded? leather recaros.tinted glass colour coded kit everything i want except its silver and in 5 dr...even got sunroof!

is that mileage too high for a vw golf in todays moder high tech terms?

that is £9993 for example

or 9995 for a black 3dr withdsg 84k miles -nowhere near loaded
or 9k for black 5dr with dsg and satnav and parrot phone kit

not asking you to choose which car i look at obviously!!but the mileage for the money is high for what id like to get BUT is it that bad for a golf gti?

last question honest   :undecided:

thanks again
matsu

guess it depends on your plan for it. if you do say, 20k miles a year and only keep it for 2 years, 117k on it when you sell doesn't sound brilliant for retaining good value.

if you do a lot less miles and will keep it for a good few years, what is there really to worry about?

choices, choices really isn't it? pay a bit more for one with less miles or just dive in :)

thanks mate......... i think :undecided:

i only do 8k ish per year short journeys and i intend keeping the golf looooong time!

i was more concerned with the implications and poss problems arising due to the high mileage.

the unloaded one has only 30k miles but has nothing that i want or need except the dsg!

fcuk fcuk fcuk

back to the drawing board..........again

Personally, I do quite a few miles to get to work and back - typically 300 miles or so a week. Hence the reason why i want a relatively new Golf with lower miles on the clock. I tend to keep a car for a very long time - my current car is still my very first car I ever bought, which is around 8 years ago now! Hence the Golf will be staying with me for a long while as well - Im not one for changing cars very often at all! That, coupled with my relatively high miles, justify my reasons for going for a newer, lower milleage, vehicle.

Now what about you? As jv just stated, how many miles do you generally do, or expect to do in your Golf? How long are you looking to keep it for? A VW s generally a very reliable car, and many people think that a Golf with 70k on the clock 'is just getting warmed up'!! TBH I wouldnt rule out a fully loaded Golf at a good price just because of its miles. These cars are built to last a very, very long time. As long as it has a full VW service history, has had servicing done on a regular basis, and looks like it has been looked after, I think you would be pretty safe with it.

Remember, theer are plenty of people with a MK1 Golf, with tons of miles on the clock, and still purring almost like new!

If we were talking about a Ford, I would have said avoid it like the plague TBH. But considering its a VW I wouldnt rule it out completely at all.

Then again, remember that its not a small purchase. Make sure its somet you will be happy with, really truely happy. Dont get it for the sake of getting a GTI quickly. Take your time if you can. The right car will come along ;) For example, Im starting to look now, but have until June to get mine! If one comes along before then, I may go for it if I hav ethe money. If not, then I'll wait and continue to save until the right car comes along at the right price.

Dont rush!

Hope that helps.
;)

thanks mate
i,m desperatley trying to be patient and prob is i dont have enogh dosh to bug what i reaaly want so i,m trying to compromise
the 3 things i will comp on are colour........ wanted black
the 3dr..... will look at 5dr
and the leather interior......... i like the gti tartan anyway but just luv that slide into a seat cos its leather!

worried about compromising on the mileage but as i only do 8k i might rehtink that ,perhaps ONLY if they got full service history and/or its a company car that has done m-road miles

but just gotta have the dsg now, mind is made up!
am going round in circles and getting dizzy

thanks again for your help!
matsu.

Do you really need a car right now, or can you afford to wait for a while longer and continue to save a little more?

Sounds like you cant afford it to me. What if you buy it and then something needs doing? Could you afford to replace a rear bumper if you bash it (about £500 minimum for parts, fitting and spraying)

Jules in most ppl's cases they dont think about smashing there car up when they are only just buying it :undecided: Has for cost if he did its only £50 for the lower half of the bumper and if you look hard enough you can source the same colour top half for next to nothing,  or get insurance to sort it.

In my case I would go for the high miler with loads of toys, what you have to realise is the 2.0 tfsi is also in the passat and motorway reps will be doing enterprise mileage in them so the engine is sound.  The only thing to watch for will be the usual suspension and bushes starting to go and normal wear and tear on the interior

Go for it mate

Im putting everything I have into a GTI when I find what I come across.......then again, I'll be selling my current car straight after and am hoping to get over £1k for it at least - so yes I do kinda agree that you should have an 'emergency fund'.

Nevertheless, if you ever needed money in an emergency you could always go for a 0% on purchases credit card. Ive used one before in an emergency, and you have time to pay it straight back off before the 0% comes to an end. Although they used to be 0% for a year or more, you can still find cards today that are 0% for 6 months at least. Not the ideal scenario I know, but always handy to know you have a short term interest free loan available ;)

However, dont forget to allow some cash for your insurance etc as well, unless you wil be paying your insurance off on a monthly basis...

Yeh, Ive never paid my insurance monthly, but if I had to spend a little extra on my GTI ED30, I'd probably set my insurance to pay monthly, then pay the whole lot off on my next pay day!

77k in 3 years = 25K per year.

That seems quite high to me.

You'll get a good GTI for around £10k I reckon - especially in the current economic climate.
Ive been selling everything I have as well, well the extra stuff at least - including my much loved XPS notebook :( Got £750 for it though so all goes into the car fund! Have to stick to using my work laptop at home as well for now :( Also sold my XBox 360 and all my games, and I have a second notebook I used to keep as a spare up on eBay at the moment!!

Have £13k saved at the moment, but want to buy a ED30 with some options on, so am looking to spend around £16-18k.
Just gotta get round to asking my sister for a £5k loan...... ;) Waiting til around May/June though, so I can save a little more and wont need to ask for as much!

ha man we def in same boat but you seem closer to where you wanna be.
am borrowing 5k from the boss!
i have to sell my alfa which will only get me 1k if i,m lucky- or px it in if i go trade!
i,m selling some very beloved bonsai trees if i can
and i,m saving every penny i get. i,m literally living on soup and beans on toast during work. i saved 60 notes last week just on food i would have bought from bakers and deli's etc so 6 weeks of that and i,ll have 360 in the kitty!
my credit rating is sh!te so i cant get a card or a personal loan so its just sve every cent.
no holiday this year and feel sorry for kids cos ive turned into a miser watching every £1 i get.
but the car will be worth it in the end.
and it will have dsg and be black and 3dr  :smug:
good luck with your car... doing the right thing NOT looking, that was my mistake!and fanx for the advice and support.
keep us posted!

Nearly £10k sounds very very steep for an 05 car with that many miles.

To put that in perspective, I sold my 2005 54 with only 45k for a shade under 9.5k - and it was well specced too, monzas, winter pack etc etc.

Got next to no calls when it was above £10k.

There seem to be a lot of cheaper ones about on Autotrader and at auction as well as loads of ambitiously priced examples.

I'd keep looking meantime!
