Post by: pitman4u on 19 February 2009, 09:26
has anyone got 1/fitted a RDS 510? i think they are offered on the touran as an option. pick up my gti on sat and im already looking at options to upgrade audio. im not really keen on the RNS sat-nav as i think its a bit pricey but i like the look of the RCD 510. i know id be best goin aftermarket as i have done in previous cars, but i kinda like the oem look in the golf  ive also heard something about vw's MDI interface that works with the RDS & RNS 510 and give full ipod info etc. any info on any this fellas?

cheers

ps. probs should have posted in audio section but just wanted 2 know if any1 had fitted specifically in mk5.

Without trying to sound like an asshole try a quick search in the forum using the search function above, I'm pretty this has been discussed in detail before.

yeh tried that 1st mate and while there is loads of info in the RNS sat nav, not to much for the RCD 510. was hoping for any 'user' opinions/info/pics before i ring the dealer and shell out for 1.

* i mean RCD 510 & not RDS 510 in original post! :undecided:

I'd love to put an RCD 510 in my mkV too.  Have you found out from VW how much it'd cost?

Hang on a minute - so the RCD510 is the same as the RNS510, but without the sat nav??

I had an RCD510 for a short time in my car.  It is basically the same as the RNS510 but without the satnav and 30Gb hard drive.

I was happy with it but changed it for an RNS510 due to the RCD510 not being fully compatible with the Skoda Bluetooth kit I have fitted.

Ive seen videos of the sat nav in the RNS510, and dont like the map interface TBH, since its more an ariel view. I prefer the Tom Tom interface where its showing you the route turn by turn 'from the ground', rather then a more ariel view - or does the RNS510 also have this view?

Just think how good an aftermaket system you could get for £962 !!

Iv said this many times before, aftermarket system is the way forward in the Golf. I know people like all this OEM stuff, but VW are just having a laugh with their prices.

I paid £700 for a new one from ebay about 6 months ago. Payed £40 to have it fitted. They are now selling on ebay for £840.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-RNS-510-RNS510-GPS-SAT-NAV-NAVIGATION-SYSTEM-MFD3_W0QQitemZ270344337293QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_AudioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems?hash=item270344337293&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Quite a good investment I would say. And is currently still the best sat nav VW have as an option all their cars and 4x4's.

btw did you try the map in 3D mode? A very good kit if you know all that it can do. Live traffic updates, POI's inc speed cameras and mobile speed camera van hotspots. And also works as a parking assist screen if you have rear sensors fitted in new golfs and rocco. Map of europe not to mention the 30gb HD

Does it come with the speed cameras as standard, or is that somet you need to buy and add later?

That's a bit pricey alright.  I'd really like to stay OEM, but I need to get my iPod connected.  Not up for one of those FM transmitters either.

I like to stay OEM as well TBH.....then again, ask Hury about his Kenwood system, that looks pretty cool - not sure how much it was though......
Check Hurdy's mod thread for more details on it....

This is one of the top end Kenwood range units and will sh!t all over anything VW can offer and is still cheaper to the tune of £210

I wouldn't worry too much about hard discs. My single din Apline HU with play MP3 DVDs. 4.7GB worth of MP3s per DVD = winner.

Virtually all modern OEM factory fit Sat Navs now have 2D (looking down directly from above) and 3D (actually 'pseudo 3D') (looking slightly above, and from the rear).  They also have split screen funtions too, and are infinately better than any freestanding sat nav, such as a TomTom, due to their 'dead reckoning' functions. :afro:

But, as they say, ETTO.

The RNS-510 (MFD3) you can zoom in and out. The maximum zoom is a view going as far as 25 yards. I haven't checked how far you can zoom out as I find zooming out so that you can see 1 mile down the road is useless. When at maximum zoom you have as much detail as that of a tomtom.

My TomTom has dead reckoning . . . . . ;)

Unless it is actually hard-wired into the cars CAN-BUS, and utilises wheel speed sensor data, steering angle sensor data, and gyro sensor data - then it definately will not have 'dead reckoning'.  :nerd:  :smug:

Sorry, but that does NOT address dead reckoning in automotive navigation systems.  More cr@p from arse-pedia!

In automotive SatNavs, dead reckoning is when the unit still continues to function even when the GPS signal is completely lost.  Which is why the vast majority of free standing SatNavs do NOT have dead reckoning.  To guarantee navigation dead reckoning, then you either need a genuine OEM sat nav system, or a complete integrated replacement head unit (which is connected to the CAN-BUS and utilises a minimum of wheel speed sensor and steering angle sensor info).  :smug:

I might getting myself in a muddle. My Tom Tom must have really basic form of it then. When I go through a tunnel an I lose signal my TomTom must somehow know what speed I was doing when I lost signal in the tunnel and just carrys on moving the car assuming that I am doing the same speed through out the tunnel so it moves along whilst out of signal.

So I take it yours is just stuck on the screen or dash, and just has a wire down to the fag lighter socket?

Anyway, yup, my old mans TomTom does that too.  But if he happens to slow down or stop, the TomTom still thinks he is moving forward, and when he eventually comes out the other side of the tunnel, the TomTom has way overshot.  I never new SatNavs could suffer with premature ejaculation until I saw that.

And if you really wanna fcuk up a TomTom, do a U turn in a tunnel!

You actually really find out how good 'true' dead reckoning is in somewhere like London with big high rises, or when going thorough those mega long tunnels under the alps.  Or even in the mountains on very close hairpin bends - many a time in Andorra I was amazed at how accurate the Audi OEM nav was - with roads literally overlapping or running parallel, and it always got the correct position.  Oddly, when I was in Andorra, I didn't really see any dash mounted sat navs like TomToms.

Yeah, its just a basic TomTom that plugs in the fag charger.

Its funny you mention London. On several trips around the centre I have actually tried to hold the Tom Tom out the window to try and get a signal when stuck in traffic as it just totally sh!ts itself and I dont know where I'm going or what turn to make lol :D

Yup mine is the same.
