Title: DIY'd clutch - now sounds like the voice of SATAN
Post by: mookie on 18 February 2009, 20:52
I had a rattling sound in the bellhousing of the gearbox, which turned out to be the fact the clutch plate had lost a spring and the flywheel was pinging it around inside the bellhousing.

Spent a good couple of days getting the box off, removed the old clutch plate and the metal plate behind it (with the wire push-on clip), and replaced them with brand new LUK items. I left the pressure plate alone as it looked as good as the new one in the LUK kit. Also replaced the release bearing and end cap, and put in fresh oil.

Car starts fine, but there's a loud whine... kind of like a wooooooooooooooooooo sound [8(] Slight pressure on the clutch pedal and it can go, but not all the time. Pulling up hard on the release arm on the outside of the gearbox also makes the noise disappear. So I tightened up the manual adjusting clutch cable, and it seemed to help alot with the noise quieter but not completely gone (bare in mind the same setup was noiseless with the old clutch).

However the really horrible noise occurs when I press the clutch pedal in. Almost halfway down it's travel there's no extra sound, just the slight wur. Past that point there is a noise I can only describe as the voice of Satan.

It's very similar to when you miss the gearing slightly, and try and force it into gear and grinds and screeches. You know, the one old women are good at in Micras [=D>]  The noise is incredible... just awful. Release the clutch again and it goes, press it and it comes back. With the pedal down and revving the the engine it gets even louder and more demonic. Revving it with the clutch pedal released, and the whine doesn't get any louder however, just with the pedal down. I tried disconnecting all of the gear linkages too, and it made no difference.

With the engine off the gears are all easily selected.

Any clues? I spent literally ages doing the clutch and getting it aligned really well. Everything torqued up properly etc. [xx(]

well that wants to come apart for sure.

would suggest changing the pressure plate,  as ether something got fitted wrong or pressureplate is poorly,    would think you'll see marks where it's been trying to eat it'self

I cannot believe you left the old pressure plate in, would have been better to have fitted the new one.
