Title: Visiting VW randomiser
Post by: Diamond Hell on 18 February 2009, 15:23
A mate swung by with a car he's been preparing for someone:

It's being shaken down this week:

Makes all the right noises and goes well.  Proper sleeper, too given the current exhaust and the ABF under the bonnet.

What's the score with the German reg? Just come over and staying or is it going back home?

OR... is it some kind of private english/irish plate and i'm just being stupid?

Shame it's multicoloured! A friend of mine has a '87 Jetta GTX. 1.8 16V with a digi dash, lowered on ATS cups.

It's left hand drive, so must be a German car.

Did the 2 door jetta ever make it to the UK ? Only ever seen American or European examples.

Nice sleeper.

Not necessarily, they were only available in LHD

I think the number plate is a dead givaway. German, or yet to be officially imported.

It's a German registration, not numpty German-look plates.

The car has been bought over here, to be built up with the ABF, now it is heading back to Germany.

You can tell if someone's bought a German car into the UK and is taking advantage - the German plates have their expiry date on them, this covers insurance and TUV.  Standard plates last two years IIRC.  If they're 'export' plates they're only valid 2-3 weeks.  I saw someone driving around with German export plates on a camper in 2007.  The plates had expired in 2005.  Now that's more than taking advantage!

i knew i'd left myself open to a smart arsed reply! hugely increased budget will come shortly all going well.

i will be buying a syncro some point this year and a car with abf to go in, but i want to do it myself but no doubt will need help from those who have done it before at various points along the way.

nurburgring again this year - could well be in the mg though

Always like a Jetta coupe. A mate of a mate has two (one from Canada iirc) and there is Mike McCoys one from two or three years ago.

Jetta was also the first VW in the family, so always a soft spot

I only just worked out what the other different thing is about that Jetta (was very tired when I looked first) it's got round headlights, not the normal rectangular Jetta lights.
IMO Jetta lights only look right on a Jetta, but i think the round Golf headlights suit it.
