Title: Jayc and his capri green 90 mk2 driver :)
Post by: jayc on 18 February 2009, 09:20
Hi all, Im Jay and im a bit of a newb here!!
I thought ide start up a little topic about just to start some converstation and also to maybe learn a little about golfs which i currantly dont know :) and to introduce myself and my car to everyone!

Ive been into changing scenes for ages, ive been into fiestas for years at currantly drive a 2 liter si which i
built myself, well obviously fords rust for sh!t and after having a 90spec xr3i escort, and 3 fiesta si's ive just got tired and fed up of searching for a viable shell to make a descent motor out of!

anyway, all my mates are golf heads, last year i went to bugjam and nothings been the same since, i was already helping my mate swap a 2.1 engine from his crashed mk1 wolfsburg into a new mk2 shell as the engine was worth way to much to sell without the proof of spec he needed, and i was the brain of the op, i met alot more of his mates and they all either had a mk2 or mk1 and i was smitten even before i started driving so there influence has proberly pushed me, along with seeing some lush examples at bugjam! i just had to get a mk2 golf.

so then i came accross this..

and this is my baby now, a totaly standard mk2 3 door 1.6 driver, its a 1990 aswell :) so the rest is history.
it had been parked on a busy main road in the first picture and i know there was alot of interest in this car, i thought i would never get my hands on it, i always wanted to post a letter to the houses where it was parked to maybe find the owner and ask if he wanted to sell it, i had this intention for months but thought he would never sell it, then i got hold of the autotrader one day when i spotted the car for sale for 450 quid! It was a steal so I phoned him, arranged to see it, went to the bank took out 400 quid and made him an offer strait away! it will be a labour of love, thats for sure..

I managed to get the big bumpers and im sourcing the skirts and arches, i want to keep it stock looking but i will be running the 20vt on megasquirt, althought i dont think i will be documenting any of the work I do, it just takes to much time up and at the end of the day you find no ones that interested lol... so unlike the fiesta, i will just get on with it, learn myself and ask for a little help along the way, but love to get involved and help others when i learn a thing or two.. theres not much i dont know about the mk3 fez.. but the mk2 is a new world to me! I know i will be able to do the 20v conversion but there is just one thing that seriously concerns me!

RUST!

I had a poke around yesterday.. and the car has rusted out where the sill ends and the arch starts, proberly at both front sides and both rear sides..

Can anyone shed any light on this and maybe if anyone else has had it is it an easy repair.. or am i looking at large cash? im happy to have it all plated and no poncy work aslong as its rustproof! because the gti skirts and arches will cover all of it. I live 20 mins from TSR if anyone has experience with them and there welding?

Apart from that, and some flaking laquor, the odd stone chip, the car is in a very nice looking condition.. but that doesent mean its a rust bucket, i will post some pictures later of the areas im concerned about!

Anyway, nice to meet you all  im a little crazy and frantic at times but im a good soul :)

Jay

Putting big bumpers on a small bumper Mk2 is not "stock looking" but if that's what you like.

althought i dont think i will be documenting any of the work I do, it just takes to much time up and at the end of the day you find no ones that interested lol...
I think a lot of people on here are interested in projects like this, so if you have time, do please take photos and put them up. Even if you only put a few pictures up at each stage, I certainly like to watch the transformation.

Anyway, good project. Welcome too.
