Title: Picking up my car 2moro, but a bit unhappy :(
Post by: C4 on 18 February 2009, 00:31
Hi everyone,

OK so the 6 day wait is over and im picking up my purchase 2moro. As some of you may know last week I bought a MK5 GTI in silver 2 door, dsg, lowish mileage...

Today i went to the VW dealer to finalise a few things then went into the forecourt to ogle my pride and joy to-be when i saw a nice white GTI ED30... it was stunning, the colur coded bumpers, the wheels, the horse power... the everything! but it didn't stop there, i saw behind the big iron gates of the strictly no entry zone an even sexier MK5...

It had Oettinger (i think thats how it was spelt) on the front bumper, side skirts and even the hude wheels! they look like 19"er's but probably are 18"s. at closer inspection i saw it had a huge carbon fibre front splitter and i cannot emphasize how awesome the awesome-ness was...

I went back to looking at my vehicle and... well, felt a bit gutted, with the black bumpers, the exhaust-fume-backened exhaust tips and little 17" wheels. Looking up info on the oettinger version i read that they come with either stage 1 or stage 2 setups, both of which are horse power crazy.

my car has heated FABRIC seats, BLACK bumpers, slightly scuffed alloys and a basic headunit... 6 days ago that looked pretty awesome to me, but in the forecourt today it looked like a bag of greasy chips on a park bench...

cheer me up please

Oh my... im looking at the prices on their website and just the front bumper, including carbon fibre splitter and mounting set foglamps is about 1000 Euro's... not painted!

Start saving mate, start saving
Some people mortgage their houses to fund these mods

sorry i didn't type it very clear, i went to the dealer to see my car, but spotted an ed30 which looked real nice, but then saw an even nicer one, the Oettinger one

Post by: joesgti on 18 February 2009, 02:22
dont worry about it mate, you haave the same basic car, just alot cheaper, you can easily mod the crap out of your car and do it your self, instead of buying a already done one! also a re-map will see the same power (if not more) than a std ed30. also you can get splitters for reasonable price that will make the front look alot better than the otteinnger one, check out my projet for some ideas.

gonna check out your project...
Title: Re: Picking up my car 2moro, but a bit unhappy :(
Post by: C4 on 18 February 2009, 03:18
ok now i feel a ton better after checking out your car, but did you spend a fortune getting it lookin so good? it looks mad sexy after being lowered! must handle well i bet

Im not too good with fitting things myself so i will probably have to pay for someone to fit any mods i get... I wouldn't mind getting a new exhaust as the one on mine looks pretty "weathered". But I dont want any sound coming from the exhaust, i prefer it to sound pretty quiet or standard... any ideas on a nice near-silent exhaust/backbox? not really wanting a factory one though cos I think they'll charge a fortune, where as if i get an aftermatket one it will probably be the same price only better quality, thanks

Post by: joesgti on 18 February 2009, 04:07
you can pic up catback resonated (quiet) milltek exhausts for around 300quid from ebay! they are slightly bigger, and say milltek on them. theres sooooooooo many things you can do to your car for a reasonable price, especially if you keep your eye out for things.

No matter what you get, you'll always find somet that looks different and 'nicer'. Its hard ignoring these when you are picking up your car though!

One word of advice - after you have picked up your car, or if you already have it now - NEVER check back on pistonheads or autotrader etc - at least for a few months etc! You'll only start comparing your car with somet else of the same value and wishing you had of got that, or waited etc instead. Either that, or you'll see prices dropping. It'll only frustrate you even more!

Im in no rush to get my ED30 at the mo, as long as I get it by July (before the summer ;) ), so Im starting to casually look around now. If somet pops up, I'll go for it. If it doesnt, I'll keep looking.

I know you guys are gonna hate me for saying this...............but...............I hope prices keep falling for the next few months!!
[Runs away and hides] !!!!

FWIW, when I picked up my MY99 Subaru Impreza way back when. I was chuffed. It was the 2nd Scooby I'd had, and as far as I was concerned, I had "arrived". The MY99 is still regarded as the best of the "classics", as it was a better car than the MY00 prior to changing to the Bugeye etc then STi etc.

I had a grin on my face like I had a coat hanger trapped in my mouth.

As I was loading the child seats into the back of the car, a Jeep turned up, and out popped an entire family (Mum, Dad, daughter and son)

At the same time, a BRAND new P1 was driven out to the sound of Dad saying, "Happy 18th birthday, son"......

Obviously, lots of hugs et.

As Dad is walking in to finalise whatever, he said, "Oh yeh, what stereo do you want?"
The son replied, "Just get me the most expensive one"......

Somewhat deflated my day - not for long, as the drive back from Worcester was fantastic!!

Turns out the kid was a spoilt, obnoxious little so and so. He eventually sold it back to the dealership, who spent alot fixing it up, removing all the chav stuff. Apparently as the transporter left with the car from the parents' house, the son was asked, "Will you miss it?"

The sneer and snort of "whatever" said it all really.  His 2nd car at the age of 20, was an M3.

I wouldn't want to be him for all the nice cars in the world.

Enjoy your car mate - you'll have a lot more fun and satisfaction that YOU'VE modded it to how you want it to be. You'll also learn shed loads about your car too :)

oh man, my back aches...

im out of fuel now and its raining so its time to call it a night, i haven't smiled like that in about 10 years! she's very very thirsty but i just keep feeding her more lol!

im a bit confused on the rain wipers though, it seems there are 3 setting and a sensitivity control but no matter which setting i have it on it all wipes at the same speed... sometimes not at all, is there a way to turn the auto rain sensor off?

just realised it has headlight washers and auto height adjusters, does this mean i can get some HID's/xenons and it'll still be road legal?

Joes GTI is awesome!

Don't think the little toggle switch is related to the auto-wipe function. It determines the length of interval between wipes. If you deactivate autowipers (via VAGCOM) you can then adjust the wipe interval using the toggle button.

You still need a levelling kit, the correct xenon kit + lenses and have them all properly fitted. Will cost £££.
Title: Re: Picking up my car 2moro, but a bit unhappy :(
Post by: bobotheclown on 18 February 2009, 22:28
to deactivate auto wipers just make sure the lever is set to the most bottom (grammar?) setting.

to put wiipers back on auto push the lever up one notch.

That is assuming you have the lights set to AUTO.

yep, im absolutely positively dead certain, its a normal headlight non xenon cos i changed the H7 bulbs earlier to brighter whiter ones, then pulled the windscreen cleaner lever and this long thing came out of the bumper and sprayed my headlight, it left it all soapy too.

Please dont tell me my car should have Xenons but the garage took them out cos i will be very unhappy.  :lipsrsealed:

Yep, I have them on mine as part of the winter pack but have removed the fuse as they drive me INSANE !!!! I mean how dirty can your lights get lol. You spend all day cleaning your car and then when its dusk you go to clean your windscreen and end up with soapy water all over your bonnet lol    ARRRGGHHH !!!
Title: Re: Picking up my car 2moro, but a bit unhappy :(
Post by: bobotheclown on 19 February 2009, 10:17
I think someone said on the forum that if you flick the washer lever quickly it doesn't spray the headlights. After the quick flick just spray the windscreen. it fools the car into not spraying your headlights.

Cant believe your upset mate! You are getting one of the best hatches on the market! There will always be better ones! I have seen turbo'd versions of mine, ones with better options, extra bits added since buying.

The beauty of modding is the looking forward and saving up for! Im saving for an rns510, carbon lower spoiler, carbon mirrors, carbon interior then a miltek (maybe non-res) and love looking forward to when i will have enough and put it on!

In my old car i had loads of money left after buying and modded it too quickly then had nothing to look forward to, so i sold it!

Spend some time looking for what you want, get a financial plan for the mods along with a timescale and everytime you add bits you will love your car even more, whats more it will be yours

Ithink my first mod will have to be a carbon intake (like the carbonio one)

Does anyone else have these strange things on their car?...

1) An internet cable coming out of their dash?
2) a small square black box about the same size as the golfs key remote? its stuck on my dash and doesn't look like its gonna move, i guess it could be some kind of antenna? but for what?
3)a small black thing near the rear view mirror, it has a window sucker and looks like there are 4 dark-red/semi see-through circles on there like some kind of sensor for something, this thing was hanging down from the top of the windscreen this morning and i had to re-apply the sucker.

any ideas? cos im stumped on it

You don't need the lights to be on 'auto' for the rain sensing wipers to work.

Not really.  Whilst they both use the same combined 'light and rain sensor', they both work in different ways.

hi, took some photos...

To Teutonic_Tamer:

I have two toggle bars next to the light switch, one with numbers 1-3 and one with a bar that goes from thin to thick, is that the auto headlight lowering sensor required to legally fit HID's?

here are the photo's sorry my cam is pretty cheap...

it looks like some kind of reciever or signal enhancer. any ideas?

thats an internet cable but if i plug my laptop into it what am i connecting to exactly?

that is the thing thats suckered on to my windscreen and i have no idea what it is. it is connected by a thin cable.

this is a side view of the mysterious sucker thing.

So can anyone tell me what these things are for? i do have a parrot connected to the stereo if that helps, i would rip the internet cable out but i dont want it messing anything up. im learning loads just by being on this forum so thanks guys

Its an ethernet cable - not an internet cable! Its used for networking, so yes you could connect your laptop to it. Maybe it was used to set something up initially and wasnt used since then?? Not 100% sure....

The rest looks like it may be some cheap bluetooth kit, or then again - its not one of those speed camera/laser signal jammers or somet is it?

OK, the wheel with the bar which goes from thin to thick is just the dimmer for the instrument lighting.  And the other with numbers 1-3 is the MANUAL headlamp beam level control.  It is not an 'automatic' level control, and you will not have the required sensors on the front and rear suspension arms.  So you can NOT legally retro fit Xenons, even if you use the complete OEM Xenon headlamp unit.

Just to confirm my advice, when it is dark, park up about 10 foot away facing a wall (or garage door, petrol station, or whatever).  Turn on your dipped headlamps, and move the 1-3 wheel, and watch the beams go down and up in sync with your thumbwheel.  Then when you are bored with that, look at the back-lighting in the instrument cluster, and move the other wheel, and watch the instrument lights dim up and down.  When doubley bored - drive off or park correctly!

it looks like some kind of reciever or signal enhancer. any ideas?

That is just an aftermarket GPS antenna.  Looks like someone from CeeBeebies applied the glue though!

thats an internet cable but if i plug my laptop into it what am i connecting to exactly?

That is the connector for a dash-top GPS speed camera detector system.

that is the thing thats suckered on to my windscreen and i have no idea what it is. it is connected by a thin cable.

this is a side view of the mysterious sucker thing.

And those are additional 'laser detectors' to link into the GPS speed camera warning device.

So can anyone tell me what these things are for? i do have a parrot connected to the stereo if that helps, i would rip the internet cable out but i dont want it messing anything up. im learning loads just by being on this forum so thanks guys

My final guess that those leads and associated gubbins belong to a Road Pilot - www.RoadPilot.co.uk  :nerd:

yes the glue is pretty stupid looking, so which parts can i remove without affecting my "Cheap" bluetooth kit? cos i quite like the parrot thing. is that horrible black box removeable? cos its the first thing thats noticeable and i would like to rip it out, im pretty sure that big cale is removeable so im goinf out to take it out now.

Yup, the black box, the ethernet cable, and the part that sticks with the sucker on the windscreen can all be removed safely ;)

excellent i'll take the rest out on sunday, um... does anyone know of a super hardcore glue remover? cos the company that installed it must've used tile sealant or something (or thats what it looks and feels like), it just isn't shifting!  i've tried my best at removing it but it looks like if i rub and wipe it any more the dash material is gonna start peeling/flaking or wear out!. what the hell is this sh1111t?!!!!

sorry guys, one last question, i have a 6 disc changer in the arm rest (stereo is rcd 300, yes the boring one) but in the ashtray there seems to be a cable and an adapter, is it an ipod adapter? the cable runs into and through the ashtray side (i dont own an ipod either)...

Pic of new object?? lol

They must have used super sticky Hubba Bubba on that receiver. Not sure what you van use without touching the colour on the actual dash......
I know there used to be some liquid called 'Sticky Stuff Remover', which I used to use on game cases etc after peeling stickers off to get rid of the sticky substance left behind, but dont think that will be strong enough in your case TBH....

Have you actually removed the box and now just need to remove the glue?

Post by: C4 on 21 February 2009, 12:21
yeah, i took the box off, realised how hard to glue is to get off then stuck the box back on, its partially still on there now but will wiggle off easily

Stick one of them nodding dogs/characters on it!! lol

On a serious note, not sure how you can get the sticky stuff off without hurting the dash. You dont want to rub too hard in case you make a smooth area on the dashboard!

Maybe someone else will have a better idea!
Sorry Im not so helpful!

Its an ethernet cable - not an internet cable! Its used for networking, so yes you could connect your laptop to it.

Erm... no, thats not an Ethernet cable... looks more like a telephone cable with an ethernet type RJ45 ending.  Its probably a custom-made cable for the in-car device.

Sorry, just had a better look at the pic - its a RJ11 cable.

Assuming this is not superglue or Araldite Generally nail polish remover (think it's Acetone )is pretty good for stuff like this but BE CAREFUL and test on an out of sight area for colour loss etc.  Failing that some hot soapy water and a bit of elbow grease .  Other options although never tried just picked along the way on various sites in the past (maybe mask around the area too to protect other parts of the dash):

- hair dryer and sharp spatula - effectively scraping although be careful not to damage/scratch the dash and then maybe
- WD40 or LPS (liquid penetration)
- Lighter fluid - although don't have a fag at the same time
- Mayonaise - yes the stuff you put on your sandwiches - apparently this has natural adhesive removing properties
- Rubber cement thinner - try an art shop

- Other option is to google, god knows what other stuff is out there but a good starting point is trying to understand exactly what it is.  Whoever did this install should be shot!

Just a disclaimer - In offering such advice I am not responsible for your actions in carrying out any of these option and resultant condition of your dashboard

Nail polish is fantastic! it helped get a lot of the crap off! Thanks Kermit

one thing is concerning me though, in order to completely remove all the useless crap installed, the dealer told me to take the entire dash out as thats where all the wires are conneted to the loom, this is also the reason they said they didn't remove it.

Im not gonna do that as i cant, so today i cut the wire to the gps antenna (black box) and cut the wire to the internet/phone/ethernet cable both at the shortest point and taped the ends up then just tucked them back into the dash completely out of site. Is this safe? i mean im not sure if thats a big electrical no-no so i am a bit concerned here.

If it is ok to "hide away" the useless cut cables like that then i shall do the same with the road angel sensor thing cable tomorrow.

The last thing on my mind is I discovered a new aerial today, its situated on the glass just behind the passenger sun visor, why would i have so much crap!?!? im not sure if the aerial is connected to anything i still use like the parrot or the standard oem stereo... i would like to remove it if thats possible but im afraid its gonna be another "cut wire and hide" job which means i'll have 4 cut wires hidden in my dash  :embarassed: . Is it an aftermarket accessory for the components that i have removed or is this aerial something i need?

a troubled C4

Not sure what the ariel is, but Im pretty sure you can leave the cut wires hidden pretty safely.

hey phil,

I didnt write it up very well but read a few pages back, i didn't get the oettinger special i got the normal gti (which is why i was picking up my car but was a bit unhappy) as i saw the oettinger one after i purchased the gti.

I could post a pic but i dont think anyone wants to see a completely standard gti with small wheels and rusty exhaust
Who know's, after i mod it a bit i'll surely let you guys see it

Tell me about it, with all the wires i cut out it looks like i can make a new car loom! the aerial has been taken out now and guess what? the previous owner used super rock hard glue (like a glue used to bond concrete blocks together) to stick it to the windscreen!!!!!!!

It took me 1 razor blade, 1 screw driver, some simonizzz soapy wipes and a lot of swear words to get that sh1111t off! its ok now though, lukily it was stuck on the windscreen and not the dash!

what is it with glue eh? feckin previous owner!!!!...

phew glad i got that off my chest, car is looking very tidy now

Get yourself some MEGUIARS NXT All Metal Polish for those "zorst" pipes - works a treat - but bit of elbow grease required but sounds like you used to that now .  I must admit I've always been put off with non-OEM fittings like these on motors - because you haven't done it yourself you never know what the hell has gone on - as you are now finding out .

Forget about the Oettinger - the car you have is already pretty special and once you have sorted out these few bits and bobs you will enjoy it just like everyone else does - just take it out for a blast, Oettinger Specail - whats that
