Post by: simongti on 17 February 2009, 21:25
Im already thinking of more power out of my new golf but what are the best ways of going about it?

dont want to spend lots of money but do want a bit more power.

de-cat? Chip?

chop it in for a 16v.

alternatively, panel filter, FULL SS exhaust system, and sort out the suspension.

Wasting your money on an 8v really! You will have to spend mega bucks just to get close to a standard 16v

Yeah didnt think there was much point but worth asking the question.

how easy is it to replace the 8v unit for a 16v?

really easy. Just go to a car dealers and hand over X amount of money and they will give you one

on a more serious note. I wouldnt bother. Id just buy a 16v rather than transfer engine over.

Is it really not worth the work?
just my 8v is quite tidy inside and out and wont be able to pick up a tidy 16v for what i would sell mine for.
oh well i might do a few little jobs to the 8v till i get bored of it.

This is covered all the time. You cannot get power out of the 8V engine. Even spending hundreds on turbos will only give 15-30BHP.

Panel filter, drilled airbox, de-cat and a backbox will be the most you can do. A good service and cleaning up grounding points will help get it back to stock BHP.

to get power out of it the engine will have to come out for the work to be done,  at that point it's far easyer to put an engine in thats willing to be tuned.

the cheepest way to get power without removeing it is  buy a megasquirt, 2 headgaskets  and a turbo or supercharger, have fun fitting it  enjoy the 200 hp till it goes bang.

or  buy  16v, turbo 2 headgaskets  arp bolts a megasquirt and enjoy the 300 hp then get forged internals and a bigger turbo

Sorry to hijack the post, but I assume it's the same story for the Mark 2 Digifant engine, the 8 valve GTi?

regarding the mk3...have a look in the 8v section as there's loads of links about turbo & superchargers for the 8v (a 16v beater is what you want! but it's not cheap!) Dicky or bored-welsh-lad is doing his at the mo

and mike have a word with rubjohnny the mk2 expert...he'll know the best way for more 8v power

ok thanks all.

digifant don't like seveere tuneing but it'll deal with it a lot better than the mk3.       can get eproms  to ditch the digilag and use g60 injectors

stock injectors give up at 140 ish iirc

Never worth fitting a 16V, yes it is a bit quicker but not much more torque than you have now plus your insurance will be a lot more than insuring a factory car and you will need a engineers report.

Never worth the hassle to be honest.

I have driven both 8v's and 16v's and my choice was an 8v, yes the 16v is quicker but is only around 10lbs ft of torque more and I still think an 8v is smoother.

As said, there isnt much in it between 8v and 16v's

I still like to have the bragging rights though

there isn't much in it between a mk3 gti and a 1.1 saxo.

The only reason I'm going to convert to a 2.0 litre 16 valve engine is if mine decides it's had enough and dies. Which, at 130,000 (a lot ragged) miles still is a little bit away.

Might go the VR6/G60 route... ... ...

just strip it, rear doorcards and all e/w motors etc they weigh a bit!change the suspension make the handling nice.give it a good serive aswell. no point in dropping a 16v engine unless ur using it for the topend. driving an 8v gti now and agaisnt 16v ibiza cupra sport (ABF engine) theres no difference in the performance till bout 75mph and thats a stock ibiza that weighs about 1250kilos. factory statistics say the ibiza 0-62 7.9 secs, 8v golf 0-62 10.1 secs. ran 0-62 in 9.2 secs as tis stripped, ibiza in 8.4secs, engine in better condition that the ibiza even tho both around 90k on the clock! dont waste ur 400 quid on performance when your best option is lightening the car itself! spend £300 or so on the suspension and keep a nice motor with a lower insurance group for urself!

there is a massive differance between 8 and 16v.     have had numerous cars with both 8 and 16v enignes and driven even more.

if you drive it like a girl and short shift it the 16v will just be a bit better you drive it hard and the 16v has loads more useable power. prime example i woudl say is the enigne in mine and diamond hells car,  the two cars are very simalar wieght and gear ratio wise but accseloration is massivly diffrent.

toms goes well and will happily get to the top of the clock  but the engine is still flat up top compared to the abf  ( it has been tweeked since it did that dyno run )   i can assure you mine withthe ABF  pulls a LOT harder from the start and just keeps on pulling off the clock.   the ultamate proof of this is DH spent a lot of time and effort buiding and fitting a crossflow 8 valve and fitting it to his syncro and no more development of that engine will be happening and an abf has been bought to replace it

yeah true mate, when i had my last mk2 golf gti 8v i smoked an ibiza abf, nissan primera 16v etc up to around 80-90 mph, then their top end would gradually get the better of me. im guessing the mk3 8v wouldnt do to badly either.

meh  mk3 8v  can't be good,  borrowed mothers 1.1 saxo shopping waggon,  it takes a lot of driveing  but i can just get away from a mk3 8 valve gti in that and that is saying something.   anyway i best stop fitting my new 185 bhp abf and find a smelly old 1.8 pb ?

lol with the saxo mate, i knew mk3 8v's were pretty slow but didnt think they were that slow! ive only driven 1.4 and 1.9 tdi mk3's... mk2's FTW.

whats the abf going into mk1,mk2? im planning an abf swap for my mk2.

If your gonna spend on a mk3 8v tho... exhust manifold, stainless exhaust, fairly stiff suspension, intake(whatever you choose), strip as much weight as you can, good grippy tyres, big-ish brakes, front upper and lower strut braces, rear strut brace, AQY head (intake at the front rather than the back of the head ;) coupled with some nice sounding carbs.

Or sell it and get a vr6, with all the money you would spend on an 8v you could use the sold 8v money and other funds to do the basics on a nice VR. You can get the vr's quite cheap these days.

what the hell is peoples problems.

The man asked what are the best mods for an 8v.

And then you all jump in harping on about how he shouldnt of got a 8v. Sorry he didnt ask you for that. And some off you hypocrites dont even have an 8v, let alone 16v.

Rant over

People go off on one.....they gloat how fast their car is faster! Face it...it is not how fast, it is the drive.

Best you can do is, remap +9, or go all out and get a supercharger....but that is £££££

16v was in reply to another post.

the best mods for 8v have allready been mentioned in this thread and others  but there is no point doing them if people have unrealistic expectations.
you can go to 170 bhp with couterflow head  but thats about it  there just ain't anymore there   and that costs.

as has been said menay times before in meany topics but once again heer we go

head off,  sort the ports  else it's allways going to crap.

give it a cam  kent gs2h or 266 degrees and 11.2mm lift  at least.

give it an exhaust to breath through  4-2-1 is optimal  and 2 1/2 inch to the tail pipe

now it'll need some air so a pannel filter will help

now the ecu will be holding it back,  it needs a tweek to stop it trying to protect the cat    and then some bigger squirters ( good luck sorting the ecu )

there you answerd the qusetion again but it was probaly pritty much pointless.   don't do the headwork the ports will allways strangel it and reduce effectivness of all the other mods,   don't need an all out race head  just tidyed up and opend out the the gaskets and a bit of valve seat work  will make a nice differance.

oh btw can't call me hypocrite :P  i have had more 8 valve golfs than you can shake a stick at, infact still have one and it even comes out occasionaly.     have also built and tuned countles  8v motors for myself and others and even pulled 100bhp per ltr out of an 8 valve to prove a point when i liked them.  but i got bored of them and they ran out of room for development.

To be honest there isnt much difference in the 8v and 16v, you'll end up paying twice as much for one but get no where near twice as much performance. 8v feels lot more torque low end also which is great and a real bonus over the 16v.

Don't listen to the 16v girls i think there bitter they paid so much for ragged cars that they try and belittle people lol

Of course there is a difference between the 8v's and 16v's otherwise why would VW have made them in the first place.

8v = easy to drive, nothing really to special about them as they are a grossly underpowered engine in a large comfort car.

16v = high end power if you don't mind thrashing the tits off it to get it (as per design), again though, underpowered for such a large car.

If you want to tune it on a budget, a 16v will always stand you in better stead than an 8v will.
