Title: 2E/PB Head Gasket
Post by: Maltloaf on 17 February 2009, 14:35
Hi,
I have got to take the head off my 91 8v GTi and I think it may be giving signs that it has gone anyway. It has got a PB head on a 2E bottom end.

For the life of me I can not remember which head gasket I used when I built it, but I do remember trying a couple before getting it right, and the metal one I ordered did not fit very well.

Which one do you guys recommend? Is it a standard 2E or PB, or another one?
Also are the head bolts stretch bolts or can I reuse them?

Thanks

Matt B.

2e (composite) or ABF (metal) head gasket is what you want.  Technically you can re-use 8v head bolts, but for the price of them I always just buy new!

Cheers John,

Speedy and precise as usual

In your opinion is it best to get one from GSF, Euro Car parts, etc, or OEM?

GSF or AVS would get my vote, never had an issue with head bolts/gaskets from them :)

I would buy new head bolts as the torque depends on a designed stretching of the bolts. This stretching also work hardens the bolts, making them brittle and more prone to snapping.
