do some cabs have a plastic rear window?
its just a lot say glass rear window and i thought they all were glass so why advertise
-
I have never seen a cab with a plastic rear window, maybe it's a cheap after market purchase.
-
I've never seen or heard of a mk1 cab with a plastic window as there's no need for it to have one as the back window sits on the parcel shelf when it's down. Only cabs that have plastic windows are the ones that need to fold over when down, like Alpha GTA's, Audi etc.
-
i have never seen a plastic windowed golf cabs its just car adverts stating glass rear window which made me think if there was any other type.
i guess the adverts must be from people who would put paint and tyres in ads as a feature.

the way in which the roof fold down enables a glass window to be used. plastic windows in the early days were well known for going cloudy and tearing on the fold lines due to the weather. Just look at a PUG 205 ragtop window its like looking through yer grandmas frosted windows.
-
my samba shares the same roof with a 205 and its window split aswell.
its due to it being pvc (poly vinly chloride) the uv light in sun light forms chlorine free radicals in the material which initiates a chain reaction and causes the damage.
-
i knew it was poly what ya ma call it
-
just thought it was intersting why it happens
-
While on the subject does any one recommend or know of anywhere that does the rear frame for the window on the Mk1 cab? I've done a bit of hunting but had no luck so far; any info on this would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance

dug one out on ebay on a buy it now option for 60 quid ooo about 4 month ago, ive spent most of the day stripping it down and priming it they rust like mad even this one needed sand blasting, i take it yours has gone rusty? the lip on the edge goes easy.
i am taking my old one off soon, although its probably no better than what yours is. if you have no look i can send you photos of my old one, it dont let water in but it is rusty in the bottom left hand corner the inner lip, i am only going to throw it anyway.
youll have fun hunting one down though as most places want to sell you the whole hood construction. buying brand new is very pricy, ring round scrap yards you might be lucky and find a side on crash where the hood frame can not be used.
took me ages to find one i am affraid.

hey carrie i aint mocking it, just wish i knew the technical jargon everynow and again
-
db sam ill keep my eye out for one
I'll have a look into being able to patch one up, tricky to weld onto as the lip is so narrow and only a few mm thick.
How damaged is it?
-
I think people advertise the fact that it has a glass rear window as its a selling point.......when I bought mine the owner mentioned it, I knew they were all glass but he seemed to think that some were plastic........yet to see one ;)
-
