I just picked up my first GTI on Saturday. Hot-damn it's fast (coming from a 10yr old 1.4 Astra)!! Anyway, I love it. It's a 2006 model year, 3 door.
One thing I'm not getting is the supposed "easy-entry" seats. They're supposed to slide forward after you lift the handle and tilt the seat-back forward - is that right? I'm lifting the handle and tilting the seat-back forward, but there's no movement forward of the seat-base. I know you have to push it or pull it or whatever, and I'm trying that, but it won't budge. Could it just be really stiff?
Is there a knack to it that I'm missing? I don't want to force it too much and break something!
-
When you push the back of the seat forward it usually releases the base and slides forward. Theres no other way to do it except pull the base forward via the handle underneath the seat, but that will soon get annoying. Back to the stealers I say and get them to have a look if it isn't up to scratch.
-
Mine are pretty stiff, they don't slide forward incredibly easily, but they do move with a decent push. If you have given it some welly and they still don't slide at all then this is not right and you should take it to a dealer as ed30 said

Thanks guys. I haven't tried them all that much yet (only have the car 2 days, and still haven't actually had anyone in the back). I'll have a proper look again at both seats this evening, and see if they'll move for me. Can you tell me: does the handle need to remain lifted to allow them to slide, or can you release the handle once the seat's tilted forward?

you need to keep the handle lifted and the back pushed right forward. bit fiddley sometimes.

Yeh if you're not keeping the handle lifted that will be why they aren't sliding
-
Dont think you do need to keep the handle lifted, the handle releases the back of the seat to tilt it forward and when you push the back of the seat towards the dash that releases the base....if that makes sense.
-
mines in for warranty next week... passenger seat stopped moving forward. rubbish quality compared to my old MK4!
-
I seem to remember, that you lift the handle once to tilt the back, and then keep it lifted and push the seat forward.
If you release the handle after tilting, the seat base will not slide.
:undecided:

There is a plastic retainer kind of L shaped located on the bottom of the seat, it holds the cable that operates the sliding mechanism, they can break (as one of mine did) replacements cost about 70p and you can fit it yourself. You may have to fine tune the length of cable by screwing it in or out like a brake cable on a push bike.
-
I tried the seats again last night, and they're definitely not moving - either of them. I'll pop into my local dealer when I get a chance and see what they say. Thanks again for the help

It seems there are cables that have become disconnected. Can anyone tell me if this is a big/awkward job? Any chance it's something I can fix easily myself?
-
There is a knack to it...... Lever up.....push seat back to make it more errrrr folded forward.... They should slide easy enough now getting them to return to where you left them LOL that's a bloody web discussion forum on it's own www.cantgetmysh!ttyseatsback.com

I know what you are on about, it's nothing to do with stiff seats!
My passenger seat has just had this problem and I can barely find anything on the net, someone here mentioned a snapped cable which is right.
This is what I did to find out exactly what is wrong:
- Raise both seats to the maximum height
- Compare both mechanism movements for driver and passenger seats to see what the passenger seat is not doing
- If the lever is moving down beneath the seat (long black metal thing) but not to the bottom it means it has weakened, if the thing doesn't move at all unless you do it manually then the cable connecting the lever (the thing you lift on top of your seat to move it) has snapped somewhere inside.
I am going to try and see if I can fix it but before I do I will get a price from a VAG specialist, cba with dealer prices.

I like a new car that needs 70p widgets and spanner adjustments to cables like a push bike, I really do.
It adds character, you don't get that with a Honda.
-
Mines pretty hit and miss with this too - I find I have to physicallly push the seat back hard forward almost as though the side bolsters are pressing into the seat side bolsters then I can slide it - right pain in the a$$. Someone tried to do this on the passenger side and couldn't get the the seat to move forward to let his girlfriend in the back - his comments were "Looks like you bought yourself a right ringer here" :embarassed: I don't think they are "broken" just badly designed although I'm sure someone at VAG thought it was a clever idea on paper (or in a CAD system!)
-
Thanks Kermit. I'll have a look again and see if I can get them to move with your tip. I'll let ya know!

That's why I got a 5 door!

yeah - but they don't look as nice as a 3 door  besides if the seats don't work it means you can't take passengers in the back (unless they are matchsticks and can squeeze through) - bit of extra weight saving, great for fuel economy and even better for Chav machine thrashing on the twisties

Actually a couple of weeks posting here that it was just a "knack" my drivers seat won't slide. It looks like the mechanism cable, like a bike brake doesn't shorten when you push the seat forward. Logically it's like the end inside the seat is disconnected. Hmmm if so can't see it as an easy fix. Any ideas anyone?

Basically the cable inside the seat isn't responding to the piece under the seat that makes it push back and forth (you can watch what parts move by using the handle under the seat instead), it looks like it would need the back part to be taken off to replace a part worth a few pennies.
Unfortunatly passengers I have just lift the handle once and smack it really hard because it doesn't move (despite telling them keep the ******* handle pulled up) so it is no surprise to me.
I'm no expert I just compared my passenger to driver seat and noted the differences, If anyone gets a fix let me know.
-
Yep same here. Did someone say they replaced a part? What was it? Any idea the p/n? Or a quick pic?
-
Ok fault found. I had a spare ten minutes. There's a little black plastic piece which retains the cable. This is located at the bottom corner of the actal seat where it pivots back and forward. This clip is broken and doesn't allow the cable to anchor to the seat thereby not operating the mechanics underneath to allow fore and aft movement. Fiddly to change, waiting on price from VW "my system is down sir I'll call you back" ;-) Surprise Surprise....THEY DIDNT CALL!!! Arnold Clark have now done themselves out of nearly a grands worth of work on my car that is due (timing belt, service, dsg service, a/c, brakefluid, waterpump, fuel filter etc)...muppets!
Ok can't upload pics here from iPhone will try later if anyone asks for them, but will update the price and part number to save anyone else the search. They cost about 45p I got it from VW Verve in Glasgow as they were on top of their game when I called.
Having a nightmare trying to fit the piece though, its very fiddly and either its not lining up correctly or I cant muster enough strength up in my hands to force it into position.

After quite some time upside down behind the drivers seat I managed to extert enough finger force and heard a click :-) all working now thank the lord.
Couple of things that may help the easy entry seat weary..
1. You can disconnect the cable from the mechanism under the seat, this will free up slack.
2. Unhook the cable from both the retainer on the floor and from the broken or replacement clip.
3. Push the cable out of the way totally to allow maximum access.
4. You can actually poke your fingers through to touch the clip from both beneath the seat and more importantly from behind. With the clip in position (but not seated all the way home) you can the push until you hear a positive click.
Sorry it's convuluted. As predicted it was as fiddly to fit as it was to describe.

Good set of info, will have a fiddle with mine (my car ) soon, any luck with the item name?
-
All, the offending part was on the drivers side,...however I purchased one for each, just in case the passenger seat ever goes bad too.
Details
V1K3 881 132 B D10302 BRACKET unit price 0.39
V1K3 881 132 C D10606 BRACKET unit price 0.39
Glad its fixed, but there must be an easier way to actually fit it...Perhaps taking the seat out would be a good idea...anyway, guess now I have done it once it should in theory not take as long the next time.

Good man!
The biggest cost is labour if you were to get a professional to do it, I wouldn' take the seat out unless I know what I am doing.
Thanks for the part details!
