Title: Alarm Light
Post by: andrewparker on 16 February 2009, 09:27
Hi guys, just a quick question regarding the alarm status light on the Golf door.

When I got to my car this morning the light was not flashing but was on continuously. I was wondering if there was a reason for this?

TIA

Its a known fault, mine did it occasionally. Normally a relock/unlock clears it. Somebody posted a VW tech bulletin on another site and I think the cure is to replace the door control module. I never did as it was so infrequent.

Edit - Having re-read your post just to clarify what I am describing is a steady red led AFTER the car has been unlocked. If it is on before then I dont know.

Cool, it's the first time I've noticed it. Was concerned it might mean someone had tried to break in, or something like that!

I have noticed this too a couple of times (MY07).  I checked the manual and couldn't find any references to the light to quickly forgot about it until now :)

Just to be different sometimes I go out in the morning and the light isn't flashing at all.  Panic I've left the car open overnight and try the handle and find that its locked as it should be.  This will happen about once every couple of months.  Any ideas?

To my knowledge the MK5 will auto lock its self after X amount of time of you getting out the car and not locking it.

I've just bought a '06 GTI and I don't know if it has an alarm. I'm in Ireland, and I don't think alarms were standard on GTIs here then.  How can I determine whether my car has one (other than locking it and then giving it a shake!!)?

Probably the best way tbh - sit someone inside and get them to move about.  There is a 15second delay from setting the alrm to when it is fully armed..

Check in the drivers side door pillar if there is a button for switching the interior ultrasonics / tilt sensor off?

There is one of those buttons on the driver's side door pilar alright.

I'd think that means you've got an alarm then

I cant believe VW would roll out a 22k car without an alarm.

Nooooooooo.   The Mk5 will only auto lock if you unlock the doors with the remote, but then don't actually open the doors within 30 seconds.  If you have driven the car, or even just opened the door, then the Mk5 must be locked either by the remote, or with the key in the 'ole in the door.

My knowledge is not always correctly as TT has just demonstrated.

Well - it has an alarm alright.  Don't a lot of new cars come without them these days, with just immobilisers and such?

As I said earlier I HIGHLY doubt VW would send a 22k GTI out the factory without an alarm.

Not sure about the Mk5's but with the Mk4 GTi's you had to be careful when buying an import as the alarm was often missing.  That and having no speakers in the back - I think this is still a 'feature' of many imports.

Exactly.  I think it was only the very basic poverty spec Mk5 Golf which had no alarm in the UK.  Though standard fit may be different in different countries.

Seems to be just an option in Ireland (like everything else), but at least my car does have the alarm.  I'm surprised the GTI comes with a honeycomb grille and alloys as standard in Ireland!  I've said it before and I'll say it again - you Brits dunno how good you have it when it comes to buying cars.
