My steering rack is fooked anyone know how much they cost to buy and to fit??
It will be going on the warranty (hopefully) also got to replace the front wheel bearings.
Its just one problem after another with my golf  I still love it tho
-
Are you sure its defo the rack? I had to replace the rack arms, only around £10. Full rack is more like a ton I think.
-
yeah there's PAS fluid coming out the rubber cover and going all over my wheels  seem a rack for £130 on ebay, got to phone the warranty company asap and see if its covered
-
Got to be worth a shout. Warranty should not pay out on wear and tear, but I wouldn't think a rack is wear and tear!
-
Time for an R32/TT 225 rack, :P 8)

What he said, you only need the steering rack and track rods arm things
Also look for Cupra R in your search
-
If I got it done on the warranty they will only use the correct part  also dont fancy buying a used one for it to only break again
-
Steering rack is quite involved, need to drain fluid, unbolt banjo bolt from the P.A.S pipe, drop the subframe and rack clamp bolts and undo the pinch bolt on the bottom of the steering column undo track rod ends
-
I so unfortunately i was right steve
OEM from VW - i was quoted wait for it - £400

seen them on ebay for £130.
anyone know how much/where from I can get a TT rack??
-
I think they're about £680 from Audi/VW, but you can't exchange unless you've got a friendly parts guy. ;)
Best bet is to trawl the classifieds/ebay/breakersyard.com etc, etc. :afro:
They usually come around for anything from £80-150 SH. :)
-
just sold mine for £28, complete rack and subframe  are you sure your not leaking brake fluid? cant see how pas fluis is getting on the wheels from the inner rack gaitors :undecided:
-
There was fluid on the subframe underneath the gaitor

Will the fluid damage the paint on the alloys?? Might be worth checking.
-

Stupid question steve are you sure it a wheel bearing - check for the "50p shape" wear on the inside edge of your tyres.
Your probably thinking im way off - i also didn't think tyres could cause a noise which sounds so much like a wheel bearing!!
Defo worth a look

Already seen your post Rich :afro:
I took the wheels off to check it wasn't the tyres and thats when I saw the leaking steering rack  also the drivers side hub had play in it so its definitely the bearing

Had both my front bearings done yesterday and the noise was coming from the right bearing but it was the left bearing that was fooked. Changed both anyway and its so much better now so smooth.
-
quick update; my steering rack is loosing fluid as quickly as the 1.8T drinks petrol
