Started to remove the cylinder head off my mk2 8v this morning at work and all of the manifold-downpipe studs have snapped despite being soaked in wd40 for 2 weeks :sick: I had to come home from work as they wanted to lock up so i need to source some new studs for monday, my question is do the studs screw into the manifold like convential studs or are they pressed in from the other side? If they are screwed ile get myself down B&Q and get a length of threaded rod or some bolts and wack them in there. If pressed it could be abit of a problem :huh:

VW sell these. I dont think the B&Q ones will last that long

Cheers thats very helpfull. Ive bought a length of zinc plated threaded rod from B&Q, do the studs screw into a blind hole or do the studs come out the other side? You think the B&Q rod will corrode prematurely or melt?

Just personal opinion, but I reckon it will rot before your very eyes, and will shear like tin if you ever need to un-do them again.

hmm maybe take a trip down to vw on the way to work monday, bet they wont have them in stock mind!

Get the ones made for he job. There may be a difference in the threads too, ie, the manifold end may have a different thread to the but exhaust end, but TBH, I can't remember if this is the case. :undecided:

Good tip.
GSF also sell [cheap-ish] copper nuts as well if you can be bothered to get them.

Well this morning went pritty bad, removed the head, one of the water flange studs on the side of the head snapped and the head suface is badly pitted in a couple of areas. Have had heat on the manifold-downpipe studs and heat on the flange stud, wont budge. Ideally i need a another head and manifold. :sad: If anyone has anything please let me know, or alternatively you can have the car for £450! going to have to walk to work tomorrow, very fed up :cry:

Well it sounds as if your head needs a skim, so whilst that is being done just ask the machine shop to remove the studs from your manifold and fit new ones. Same with the head stud thats broken. You can't just give up because of a minor problem.
You can also give the head a bit of a service for the cost of time only, and when it goes back together, you will know its right. :wink:
