MK1 and Mk2 booth using 1.8 16v KR engine same gear box which gti will be faster and more fun?
-
It has to be the mk1, its smaller and lighter.

Not really because the cd factor for mk1 is very poor 4.2 but mk is 3.2.I remember i read one report before compare mk1 and mk2 both same 8v 112bhp engine before both car reach 100mph the mk1 ahead but 100mph onward the mk2 took the mk1 because the cd factor but i don't know how with the 16v engine.

::)
ay?????? ??? :-X :D

MK1 without doubt... Same comparison would be the MK1 8v V's the MK2 8v... I know which one would win.. Nuff said!!! ;)

i think what he is trying to say is up to 100 the mk1 is faster in terms of acceleration.
but over that the aerodynamics of the car take over and the drag affects the mk1 more and then it evens up with the mk2 having a faster overall 0 to MAX speed time.
my answer to the question would be if both have 16v engines then the data would be proportionally the same but with lower 0-100 times and higher top speed.

Any more comment welcome!

mk1 would be more fun to drive IMO but the mk2 would be better performance wise (probably!) :D

I own mk2 8v gti and mk2 16v gti before both also good gti but talk about fun driving still the original mk1 gti so until today i sold all my mk2 gti and still keeping my mk1 gti!

agreed. up to 100 much of your acceleration is down to weight, or lack of it. after 100 the effects of drag start to take over quite drastically, so the mk1 may be struggling.
btw, you could see this principle at work at Santa Pod. The fastest cars tended not to be the modded cars, but the stripped out cars.
you could compensate by changing the 5th gear ratio for something a little shorter that would increase your power at 100 and you would stay in front of the mk2, but then your top speed will get hammered. even more.
the lack of drag of the mk2 will certainly give it an advantage when your maxed out. maybe a higher top speed, but definitely lower fuel consumption.
having said that, the 16v unit is so good that on one occasion i had mine maxed out and the only thing stopping my progress was that pesky rev limiter. and that fact that i was burning at 1.8mpg, which equated to around 1 gallon every 21 seconds.
if you could find a track long enough you may find that the 16v unit in a mk1 will be similar. however, drag vs power is not linear.
