Hi all
Ive had a bit of trouble with the golf since this time last year,
Link about the problem = http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=81609.0
no garage can sort the problem, the car runs just kangaroos once warmed up.
so basically i need some help making some choices, as i just dont know what to do
they only thing i can think of doing at present is to scrap the car, however i dont really want to do this.
The body is excellent had a respray few years ago and was wax oiled underneath, also last summer the chassis was treated again.
its lowered on koni shocks, with a new set of ronal ls wheels, also has a few other new parts.
what will i get for it by scraping it?
or is there a cheap ish option to get it fixed, ie how much would it cost to have another engine (thinking that may be the problem)
I think the maximum i could afford would be £500, s that enough for a new engine?
i havent got a clue on fitting one
please help
ps im in Bristol if anyone can help
cheers
Adam

Not an expert but would think you'd get an engine for £500 no problem.
As for fitting there's loads of knowledge on here.
I'm on with taking the cylinder head out of a Corrado with no previous experience, got most of the help I needed from this site and it's been easier than I expected.
Can all seem a bit daunting but I say do some research, ask for some advice and get stuck in.
Is your Golf a spare car (as in not your daily) if so there's no rush so take your time and get it back on the road.
-
which garage have you been taking it to? It sounds like one of those annoyingly simple problems that a mechanic who really knows his way around that engine will spot in minutes
where are you based? we might be able to recommend a decent local vw specialist
-
its not a daily drive thank god lol
ive only just put it on the drive at xmas after 8 months of taking it back and forth to garages
its been to:
a garage in the fishponds ind estate, the guy had allways been the mechanic to the car for its life of about 27 years
then another garage in avon meads ind estate
another garage in staplehill
then i was thinking of taking it to PC Motors, in gloucester road, but im starting to think no garage can fix it if its been to 3 others
which garage are you thinking of, i heard graham bates will swallow the £500 ive save over the year, just diagnoising lol
thats why i just thought how much will it be for a new engine fitted (second hand engine tho)
thanks for the extremly fast responses

Not sure what the issue is as it sounds like you've had everything checked or changed. Sounds like it's too good to scrap though. Save some more pennies and get a 16v put in it.
-
How many more pennies will a 16valve engine plus fitting cost tho, i dont know of anywhere i could get this done, tried searching google for engine conversion companies and not much come up for bristol or nearby, all up north lol
ive got until april the 1st to sort it, thats when i dont have a driveway anymore lol
if i sell the wheels might get a few hundred then see what i could get for the rest of the car on here lol, dont think i can do that tho
-
Did you try asking on the mk1 owners club about your running problem?
-
Not sure how much more for a 16v, but have a look in Golf+ & PVW as they usually have some companies with prices for different spec engines.
This kangarooing issue, it's not something like a missing earth is it ?
As said already, ask the same questions on the mk1 owners club forum (http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/) about the problem and see if they have any ideas.
-
If your around the Bristol area have you thought about heading down the m5 to TSR in bridgwater?
-
I've had this issue on a few mk1 golf's 'the car runs just kangaroos once warmed up' - it was the Fuel Rely, when it gets warmed up (it will be hot) the fueling its provided to the engine injectors properly. Replace the Fuel Rely.

This morning ive gone and bought another fuel pump relay, maybe the one i bought a few months ago was duff,
I have the old style fuse box with the bullet shaped fuses, the fuel pump relay has a new fuse and not the old style.
is there another relay just called fuel relay or did you mean the fuel pump relay?
Cheers
-
sorry I meant to say Fuel pump relay.
Full details can be seen on this page regarding fuses and relays - http://www.cabby-info.com/electrical_system.htm (Very useful website as mk1 details are near the same as cabs)
Make sure wiring on the back of the fuse box is ok as well and not burnt. Check the wiring near the fuel pump also.
-
today ive tried a new fuel pump relay, but ive noticed that my relays are a little mixed up, im starting to think i should check the diagram against what the car has, cheers again madone_si
ill be back

that cabby link is no good to you, thats only valid for the later blade fuse type fusebox, the ceramic layout is different. I have the pinouts on the rear of the ceramic fusebox in my faq but i have yet to sort out the fuse/relay layout. Your symptoms wont be caused by relay missmatching anyway, if they were in the wrong spot it wouldnt run at all!
MK1 kangarooing can be caused by rust in the fuel system, common fault as they get older as the fuel fillter necks are steel, as are the fuel tanks. Have a look at the filler neck, if you see any rust on it get a new one fitted as soon as you can, then use the magnet on a string trick to fish out any rusticles floating in the tank. Lift up the rear seat, remove the metal cap and then take out the fuel level sender, chuck a magnet on a string in the hole. drive it for a week then fish it out, clean off any rust then chuck it back in. Repeat till it comes out clean.
Once thats sorted, pop off the L shaped hose between the tank and fuel pump, get ready to block the tank outlet or it'll drain all the fuel out! Then shine a torch down the fuel pump inlet, some have an inline basket filter. If fitted it will probably be filled with crud, clean that out & refit. Last of all, chuck a new fuel filter on there.
If all that doesn't help you might have rust in the injection system, which for k-jet is usually pretty terminal :(
